UNITED STATES PATENT ()FFICE JOSEPH DIERIOKX, OF UOGLE, BELGIUM.
DOOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 650,060, dated May 22, 1 900.
Application filed February 11, 1899. Serial No. 705,258. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOSEPH DIERIOKX, a subject of the King of Belgium, residing. at Uccle, in the Kingdom of Belgium, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Doors, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to a door or closing device of the kind in which two balanced. leaves, each of which is mounted so as to be capable of rotation upon a suitable axis, are connected in such a manner that any displacement of one leaf around its axis of suspension serves to effect acorrcsponding displacement of the other leaf, the object of my invention being to cause such a door to require a minimum of space for oscillating in the door-frame above and below the dooropening.
In the annexed drawings, Figure 1 showsa door or closing device constructed according to my invention, said door being closed. Fig. 2 shows the door in the open position.
The door is formed, as usual, of two leaves A B, arranged in such a manner as to close the opening 0 of the frame. According to my invention one of the leaves, A, is provided with a bell-crank, angular extension, or lever I and is suspended upon an axis D, located in the door-frame in the mid-line of the opening 0. The other leaf, B, is also prbvided with a bell-crank or angular extension 1' and is carried by a pivot D at ornear the corner of the doorway. The two extensions I I are connected by a rod G, which is hinged at the extremities E E of the said extensions.
When the door is closed, the two leaves A B rest one against the other. When it is de sired to open the door, it is only necessary to cause the leaf B to pivot around its axis of suspension D by slightly pulling the handle H in the usual manner. In proportion as the one leaf B swings in one direction the other leaf A swings in the other and the two leaves assume the open position, Fig. 2.
As will be readily understood, owing to the combination of the pivot or axis of suspension D with the bell-crank or angular extension I of the leaf A and of the location of said pivot in the mid-line of the door-opening O, which is rendered possible by such special combination of axis and angular extension, the corner of the leaf A moves through an arc of a circle whose penetration in the ground is reduced to a minimum. Furthermore, a further and consequent result is that the neces sary space above the door is also considerably reduced, so that thedoor may be placed without any difficulty, even in case where there is very little free space above and under the door to inclose the principal parts of the mechanism, this being a veryimportant feature, especially in the case of application to a tramwayvehicle.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- In a closing device, in combination with two leaves adapted to be swung upon pivots and with a rod connecting the said leaves in such a manner that any displacement of one leaf serves to efiect a corresponding displace- JOSEPH DIERICKX.
