CONVERTlBLE HANDLE AND STRAP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 649,832, dated May 15, 1900.
Application. filed October 14, 1899. Serial No, 733,646. (No model.)
To all 1117mm Ill [6]] concern:
Be it known that I, ALFRED W. FURNIVALL, of the city of New York, (Astoria,) borough of Queens, in the county of Queens and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Convertible Handle and Strap, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Myinventiou relates to an improved device by which a strap may at will be used as a handle, and comprises the novel features hereinafter described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of my device in its folded condition or in position to be used as ahandle. Fig. 2 is a side elevation showing the manner of folding the strap and se curing the parts thereof together, and Fig. 3 is a detail view of another form of attachment for the ends of the strap from that shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
The object of my invention is to provide a strap with means by which when it is not desired to use the same as a strap it may be folded upon itself and the folds secured together, so that it may be used as a handle for packages, valises, cameras, field-glasses, dtc.
The strap A may be of any convenient material, either leather, webbing, or any material which is used for making straps. This strap is provided at regularly-spaced intervals with means by which when the strap is folded upon itself the various folds may be secured together, thus binding the parts of the strap in such a manner that it may form a convenient handle. The means by which the various folds of the strap are secured together, as shown in the drawings, consist of eyelets B, which are placed, preferably, at the ends of the various sections formed by folding the strap and a pin (2, which is secured in corresponding position upon one end fold of the strap and cooperates with a socket member D, which is placed in corresponding position upon the other end fold of the strap. The pin d and socket D are constructed in the manner of the ordinary pin and socket which are used for fastening gloves and for similar purposes.
The exact form and construction of the means for securing the folds of the strap together are not material. Other means than that shown might be used, the means illustrated being given simply as a preferred form of securing means.
The ends of the strap are preferably provided with hooks E or other form of securing devices by which the strap may be attached to a satchel or package. Ordinary hooks are shown in Figs. 1 and 2. In Fig. 3 another form of securing means is shown, which is especially adapted for securing the strap to other articles. This means consists of a tab of leather, webbing, or other suitable material provided at one end with a loop for attachment to the strap and at the other end with a substantially T-shaped head for attachment to the article to be carried by the strap. The form of the securing device is, however, immaterial, as the same may be changed to correspond with the article to which the handle or strap is to be secured.
It will be seen that by my invention a strap may be adapted for use as a handle as well as for its ordinary use as a strap, which in many cases will be a matter of great convenience. The outer end fold of the strap may be provided with a name-plate F, as shown in Fig. 1, if desired.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A convertible handle and strap, comprising a strap adaptedto be folded upon itself, and provided with clampingmeans at the ends of each fold, whereby the folds may be secured together, substantially as described.
2. A convertible handle and strap, comprising a strap having regularly-spaced apertures adapted, when the strap is folded, to register, pins secured to one end fold of the strap, and adapted to enter the apertures in the other folds, and means secured to the other end fold for engaging the ends of the pins to hold them, substantially as described.
ALFRED W. FURNIVALTJ.
