BARREL-LIFTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 649,480, dated May 15, 1900.
Application filed J'anuaryZ, 1900. Serial N0. 2,703. (No model.)
To f/,ZZ zij/wm t may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN F. REILLY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York city, county and State of NewYork, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in BarrelLifters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved lifter adapted to grasp kegs and barrels and permit them to be lowered into basements or to be otherwise transported.
By my invention kegs of dil'ferent sizes may be readily secured to and detached from the hoisting-rope,so that the labor connected with their manipulation is greatly reduced.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a side elevation, partly in section, of my improved barrel-lifter. Fig. 2 is an end view thereof; Fig. 3, a detail face View of the upper jaw e; Fig. 4, a longitudinal section on line 4c 4, Fig. 3; Fig. 5, a plan of the lower jaw CZ with the ends broken ott; and Fig. G, a longitudinal section of said jaw on line 6 6, Fig. 5.
rlhe letters a a represent a pair of tongs provided with handles d and adapted to grasp a keg or barrel A. A bail b, hung on the pivot a2 of the tongs, is adapted for the attachment of the hoisting-rope, by means ot' which the tongs, together with the keg grasped thereby, may be lowered or raised. At its lower end each tong-arm is perforated for the reception of a pin or pivot c, upon the inner ends of each of which are mounted a pair of jaws CZ e. The lower jaw d is provided with a longitudinal slot d', that receives the pivot c, and at its lower end with a pair of weighted feet d2, that tend to hold the jaw normally in an upright position. The upper jaw e is grasped by a sleeve d'l of the lower jaw and is provided with one or more perforations e for the reception of the pivot c. I prefer to have a number of perforations e in jaw e, so that the apparatus may be set to kegs or barrels of different diameters. It will be seen that the lower jaw can slide along the upper jaw and that owing to the weighted base of the latter both jaws will maintain an upright position. Corrugated inner contact-faces d3 e2 on the jaws tend to bind them in position. 5o
The lower jaws d will now by gravity When the tongs are to be disengaged, the rope 6o is slackened to withdraw the jaws e and permit the tongs to be opened sufciently to clear the barrel.
It will be seen that by my invention kegs and barrels may be readily grasped and transported, so as to greatly lessen the labor heretofore connected with their manipulation.
What I claim is l. A barrel-lifter composed of a pair of tongs, and a pair of jaws connected to each 7o of the tong-arms, one jaw being adapted to slide along the other jaw, substantially as specified.
2. A barrel-lifter composed of a pair of tongs, and a pair of jaws connected to each of the tongar1ns, the lower jaw being weighted at its lower end and adapted to slide along the upper jaw, substantially as specified.
3. A barrel-lifter composed of a pair of tongs, a suspending-bail, and a pair of jaws pivoted to each of the tong-arms, the lower jaw having a longitudinal slot and a divided lower weighted end, and being adapted to slide along the upper jaw, substantially as speciiied.
Signed by me at New York city, county and State 01": New York, this 24th day of January, 1900.
` JCI-IN F. REILLY. Vitnesses:
