TO ALL WHOM'IT MAY CONGERN i f Be it known that we, GEORGE THOMPSON and A. W; JOHNSON, both ofthe city, county, and State of New' York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Lock-s, 1and that the following description, 'taken in con-- nection with the accompanying. drawings, hereinafter referred to, forms a full and exact specification of the same, wherein we have set forth the nature and principles of cur said`improvements, by which our invention "may be distinguished from all others of a similar class, together with such parts as we claim, and desire to have secured to us by Letters Patent. A, in the drawings, represents the lock-casing, which in the present instance is made of a square shape, of suitable size to receive its various working parts; B, the front, and C the back plate of the lock-casing; D, the bolt, which, by its straight por-tion'E, plays through the to'p or end-piece. F of the lock-casing, from which, extending by, its circular-shaped yoke-portion G, into the lock-casing,- it plays, by its inner forked end'H, upon a fixed stud or pin, I, of the lock-casing; J, a projection on one side or edge ot' bolt-yoke G, over which, as the bolt` is moved in or out, as will be hereinafter described, plays the loose end K of` a bent spring, L, secured at its other end to the lock-casing, this spring acting to hold the bolt either in or out, as the case maybe` by being g on either one or the other of the shoulders a'of the' projection J, as the case may be; AM, a series of tlat circularshaped disk;t'umblers,of uniform diameter and thickness, which, disks are 'placed'.one upon another, in and kbetween the-sides-oi' the yoke-frame G of thelock-bolt, as plainly shown in g. 4 offthe drawings. Each disktumbler'M is similarly notched atvlone point of its periphery, one of which notches, N, is shown in iig. 4;' and,

To eachdisk-tumbler M a tube, O, is connected, each of suitable internal and external diameter to iit one over andabout the other, as illustrated in section in g. 2 of the drawings, forming a series of concentric tubes, which passthrough the front plate. The outer ends of thc tubes O are similarly' provided withvteeth, c, thetubes being-of unequal lengths, with the inner one of the series the longest, and the outer one the shortest, and with thesaid teeth c of each tube, thetoothed edge or flange d of a series ofc-ings, Q, engage, the one with the Outer tube,fand the two others with the inner and intermediate tubes.l These rings Q lit-one over thetother, as shown ifi/iig. 2 ofthe drawings, where, by means of a spindle or rod, R, passing Aloosely through .the centre tube, withfa" head, S, at one end, and a screw-nut, T, at theother, they are held,
while at the saure time they can be freely turned, and through theengagcment of their teeth with those ofthe tubes, thedisk-tumbler correspondingly turned. Thelperiphery of each ring of the series of rings is marked olf into a series of divisions, with the division lines Ot' the' several-rings occupying such relative positions that no two of any two of the series can coincide at any one time; AW, a catch-lever, hung 'upon one side of bolt-yoke G,w hich lever, by its spring X, is forced' to bear aga-inst the 'edge of the disk-tumblers, so that, when the notches of such disks all coincide', it .will engage therewith, and thus, it' the tulnblers are then turned, cause the bolt to be thrown in or out, as the case may be. With a lock ot' thejabovc-described construction and arrangement of parts, it is plain to belunderstood, that, to lock and unlock the lock, the notches'of the disk-tumblers are required to coincide, so as to allowthe proper connection toy be established between them and the'bolt to produce the desired inward or outward throw of the bolt, as the case may be. The bringing together of these notches is accomplished through the graduated rings, by turning them inthe proper direction therefor, or, in other words, setting them so that certain ones of their divisions will coincide, for facilitating which thc several divisions or graduations are lettered as shown in the drawings, iig. 1. To break the'interlocking ofthe catchfisso 2 lever with the tumbler-disk, such lever is lifted out of tbc sume by turning in the proper directionthnt tumblerdisk which has its notch extended, whcn'then turning the other tumblers the adjustment is obviously' broken, whereby the lock cannot then be' chnnged, that is. locked it' unlocked, or unlocked if locked, Without thc propcr adjustment of the notches hns {i1-st been made. In conclusion. it may be here observed that the'caitch-levcr, as it enters the notches, owing to the spring which forces it, necessarily produces a clicking sound, by which, were nothing adopted to disguise it, the necessary adjustment ot' the disk-notches might by chance be made, and, therefore, to obvintc all possibility of the lock thus being unlocked, we deem it best and advisable to notch, at different points, the elges or pcripheries of the disk-tumblers suficicntlythat, while such notches will not allow the catch-lever tothus become engaged with the tumblers, it .will occasion u similar clicking sound to that produced by the lever-catch as it drops intothe notches, thereby, :is is evident, serving es a blind to nnyperson attempting to unlock it.
We claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The adjustable tubes O, of unequal length, fitting over each other, their outer ends provided with teeth Yc, which fit into correspondingtceth in thc flange al of the graduated adjustable rings Q, fitting one within the other, the said tubes provided upon their inner ends with notched disks M, the notches in the outer ring being bevelled upon one side, when all are constructed land arranged as described, and operating upon the yolicd- `shaped bolt G, provided with the spring-pawl W, substantially as described, for the purpose specified.
