Description
Patented May I, I900; A. n. CROCKER.
CHAIR.
(Application filed Sept. 14, 1899.)
(No Model.)
UN TED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ARA I). ,CROCKER, OF SII EBOYG-AN, \VISOONSIN, ASSIGNOR TO THE OROCKER CHA'IR COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
CHAIR.
SPECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Patent NO. 648,728, dated May 1, 1900.
Application filed September 14, 1899. Serial No. 730,402. (No model.)
will be fully set forth hereinafterfand subse-- quently claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a representation of a portion of a chair embodying my present invention, said view being partly in elevation and partly in section on the line 1 l of Fig. 2. Fig. 2'is an under-side plan view of the chair-rest with its supports in section on the line 2. 2 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the scat, which in the preferred form illustrated in the said drawings consists of a series of layers of thin pieces of wood cemented together and pressed into the desired shape,
.forming what is commonly known as a veneer seat.
B represents a brace or reinforcing-strip, preferably of suitable wood, secured to the front under side of the seat A, as by screws bl). Adjacent to each end of this front strip B the same is bored through, the bores extending part way through the seat A, forming mortises to receive the tenons or upper ends a of the front legs 0, as best shown in Fig. 1, the said mortises and tenons being preferably secured together by glue.
DD represent the combined rear legs or back posts of the chair, against which the rear portion'of the sea'tA abuts, (said scat being cut out to receive the adjacent surfaces of the posts D D,if preferred,) and the said rear portion of the seat is supported by means of the brackets E and braces F, secured to the posts D and seat A by the screws d e f. The brackets E fit against the under side of the seat and the front surface of the rear legs or posts D, while the braces F preferably engage the said parts A D at the ends; but the parts E F are in line with each other vertically, so that one screw e is passed up through the forward end of each bracket E and through the seat into the forward end of the adjacent brace F, but not I through the same, the screws (1 serving to unitethe lower ends of the brackets E to the that the back may be of any preferred con-- struction or design; but as the details of construction of such parts form no part of my present invention I have not deemed it necessary to further illustrate the same.
With chairs embodying my present invention the seats even when made of light thin veneer are firmly and strongly supported, and the chair is not only attractive in appearance, but is very serviceable and durable.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isv A chair comprising a thin bent seat, anda front lower brace or reinforce secured thereto, having mortises formed therethrough and extending into the said seat, in combination with the front legs having upper tenon's fitting within said mortises, and the combined rear legs and back posts abutting against the rear portion of said seat and secured thereto, and lower brackets and upper braces fastened to said seat at their front ends and to said rear legs or posts at their rear ends. In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand, at Sheboygau, in the county of Sheboygan and State of Wisconsin, in the presence of two witnesses.
ARA D. oRooKER. Witnesses: I
FRANCIS WILLIAMS, WILLIAM J. RIE'roW.
