f UNITED STATES P TENT OF v y AAjRON .LnvI, or GILMAN, ILLINOIS.
TSRiO USERS PO 6 KIE'T.
SPECIFICATION forming art-oftntters-Patent-No.'eaaees, datedmlay 1,,1aoo.
Apjlicatidn'iiledJuneV,1898- Eeriewed'Septem'ber-ZV,189.9. 'sa'inno. 731,865. (Il'omodel-l,
To-allswhom it mag concern.- v Beitknown that :I, AARON LEVI, a citizen of the-United "States, residing at Gi1man,I-in
the county'- of Iroquois and'State of Illinois, have invented anew and'useful Trousers-- Pocket, of-which the'following is; a=specifica-' 'tion. -My'invention relates to, improvements introusers-pockets; and one object that'I'have innw'l-iew isto provide an improved construction iwhiclrmaylbe'worii on the insidesof-the trouserawithin the rn-ainpocket, for the safe storageofxmoney and valuables, and-which is arranged to -permit of ready access by the wearerjto 'be'obtainedto the auxiliary or safety pocket, -.while atthesame'time afiordingprmv "tection against the attempts of evil-disposed persons .to relievethe pocket of contents without notice;- or wanting to the ,wearer'."
A further;,objectiof' the invention isto; provide an improved-,c'nnstruction which-will at ford protection against"perspiration'to pre- Vent tarnishing ofa watchcase andto enable the improved pocketto be 'held securely in place, while-permitting itto be adjusted so that the contents rnay be easily removed.
With these ends in view the invention consists in the peculiar construction and arrange-.
ment of the parts, which will be hereinafter fully described and claimed. To enable others to understand the inven- 'tion,I have illustrated the same in the'accompanying drawings, formi n g a part of this specification, and in which- Figure l is a perspective view of a portion of a pair of trousers lookingat the outside thereof and showing the'application of the Fig. 2 is a similar trousers and illustrating the safety-pocket more clearly. Fig. 3 is ahorizontal sectional View on the plane indicated by the dotted line 3 3 of Fig. 2. The waistband 3 of the-tron sers is not'a continuous piece like ordinary trousers; butitis divided orsplit at a point adjacent tolthe main pocket v2, so'as to form two fi'aps, which are adapted to lap one over the -other and each vof which is secured to the trousers by a separate fastening device.

end of-theou'tside flap 4. The inside flap 10, is formed by a part of the waistband, and saidv inside flap constitutes a part of'tl1e,auxiliary or safety pocket 11. stitched or united tothe trousers by the same '80 stitches 5 which fastenthe lower edge of the.
This inside flap'is outside flap 4 to said garment, and these' stitches 5 pass through the inside flap 10 at.
'a' point below its upper edge andin'terrnedif' ateof the length of said flap, so th'atthe u pper edge of theflap 10 is free or unconfined. The safety-pocket 11 .is made. of material which will resist heat and moisture, and in the practical embodiment of the'in'vention I. prefer to use asbestos or a clothof which as- 0 bestos forms one of. theg essential elements.
This safety-pocket is made up of the part 11', :'the inside flap 10, and a-section 12, which is arranged between the inside flap 1O andfthe waistband of the garment '1. This section 12 5 ofthe safety-pocket is united, as by stitches 13, to the waistband of the garment, and these stitches are located at points close to the union 5 of the flapset and 10 to -the trousers. The other 'end of the pocket-section 12 is united, as by stitches 14, to the free end of the inside flap 10, and to the section 12 and the flap' 10 is suitably secured the safety pocket proper, 11.
, tightly around the 4,2 ens-,ees
From the foregoing description it will be seen that I have provided a safety-pocket .which'iies within the trousers and the ordinary pocket 2 therein, and this'safety-pocket is confined on the trousers by the union of the flap 10 and section 12. One edge of the safbty-poclcet is also attached to the ordinary,
waistband at a suitable distance from the or-' dinary hocket 2.
In my invention the safety-pocket is permanently united at one edge to the garment, and its free edge is detachably confined in pla e, so that the pocket is held in compact relation to the garment and its waistband.
As the safety-pocket lies close to the garment, and as the wearer under some circumstances :maydesire to secure free access to the safetypocket when hurriedly removing the contents thereof, the detachable :connection 16 18 between the free end of the pocket and the garment permits the pocket 11 to be turned inwardly after disengagement from the button 18. Ordinarily, however, it is not necessary to disengage the button from the ear 16, because the wearer may obtain access to the safety-pocket by loosening the outside flap 4, thus permitting ready access to be obtained to the upper open end of the safety-pocket through the space 6, provided in the divided waistband. The outside flap 4 provides means by which the waistband may be drawn person, so that a pickpocket cannot readily thrust his fingers into the safety-pocket and abstract the valuable vcontents thereof without notice or warning to thewearer.
. ing the outside flap,
or permanently; united at one edgeanddetachably fastened at its free edge to the garment, at the hip portion thereof, resides in the fact that the pocket may be turned on its permanent connection to the back portion of the trousers. Sometimes the safety-pocket is filled or stuffed to such an extent as to make it inconvenient for the wearer to have the bulged-out safety-pocketat the front side of the trousers, pocket should be unbuttoned, turned backwardlytoward the rear portion of the trousers, and fastened in place by'a button or other suitable con'trivance. g
Slight changes may be made in the form of some of the parts, while their essential features are retained and the spirit of the invention embodied. Hence I do not desire to be limited to the precise form of all the parts as shown, reserving the right to vary therefrom.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is- 1. In a garment, a divided waistband havand in such cases the safetying an inside flap extending within the waistband and said flap secured at its free end detachably to said waistband,a safety-pocket at tached to the inside flap and having an intermediate layer or section 12 secured at one end garment, and an outside flap which extends beyond the pocketsection andis confined de tachably on the waistband of the garment to,
of the safety'po'cket, substantially as described. v
2. In a garment, a divided waistband form- 4, and the inside flap, 10, a pocket-section, 2, attached at one end to the inside flap, 4, and at its opposite end to the waistband at a point adjacent to the union of the flaps, 4, 10, therewith, a safetypocketunited to the insidefiap and the section, 12, and having one edge confined on the .to the inside flap and at its other endto the draw the same close aroundthe open mouth,
garment or the ordinary pocket thereof, and
separate fastening devices spaced at suitable intervals on the waistband and on opposite sides thereof for engaging removably with the free ends of the inside and outside flaps, substantially as described. In testimony that Iclaim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses. AARON LEVI. Vitnesses:
EDWARD W. MEYER, WILBET .I. WARD.
