JACOB HEYMAN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
SUS'PENDER-END.
srncrrrdnrron forming part of Letters Patent No. 648,257, dated April 24, 1900. Application filed December 16, 1899. Serial No. 740,535. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JACOB HEYMAN, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Suspender-End, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to front suspenderends havin gbutton-pieces for connecting with trousers and terminal drawers-supporting tongues.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved suspender-end having its strap reinforced at the inside to readily withstand the strain exerted by the button-piece on the strap, the latter, its reinforcing-strip, and the drawers-supporting tongue being all made of a single piece of leather or like material to cheapen the cost of'the manufacture of the Suspender-end and to render the latter exceedingly durable.
The invention consists of novel features and parts and combinations of the same, as will be fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claim.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings,
forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improvement as applied. Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the same on the line 2 2 in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the blank for the reinforced strap and the tongue, and Fig. 4 is a perspective'view of a modified form of the strap in an open position.
The improved suspender-end is provided with a strap A, made of leather or other suitable material and doubled up to form a loop, the upper portion of which is adapted to engage a loop B on the lower end of the shoulder-strap O of the suspender. The strap A when doubled up forms a back A, having an integral overhanging top piece A for engagement with the loop B, as described, said strap having its front A extending asufticient distance upward to pass in front of the overhanging portion A and the upper end of the front A terminates in a reinforcing-strip A which extends on the inside of the strap-loop along the front A and the bottom of the strap-loop, and then extends upward a distance on the back A and terminates in a tongue A which passes through a slot A in the back A and hangs downward from the strap, as is plainly indicated in the drawings, between the ends of the button-piece, the middle portion of which rests on the rein= forcing-strip A as is plainly indicated in Figs. 1 and 2. The upperend of the front A and the overhanging portion A are adapted to be connected with each other by a fastening device E, preferably having two members' namely, a socket E and a button E 0f which the button connects with the overhanging portion A below the loop part for the loop B. The socket E binds upon the front A the upper end of the reinforcing-strip A, so that the reinforcing-strip and the front are securely held together.
Now by the arrangement described the loop of the strap-A can be readily opened or closed by separating or closing the members EE of the fastening device E to insert or remove or look the button-piece D in place when the latter is attached to the buttons of the trousers.
On the lower end of the tongue A is secured a suitable fastening deviceF of any approved construction for connecting the tongue with the drawers, so that the tongue forms a support for the drawers.
As shown in Fig. 4, the tongue A is made in two parts, extending through separate slots A in the back A of the strap A, and the lower ends of said separate strap parts are placed one in front of the other and connected with the fastening device F. In either of the two constructions, however, the strap proper, the reinforcing-strip A ,and the tongue A are made from a single piece of material, so that it requires but comparatively little labor to form the suspender-end with the strap reinforced, as described, at its essential point and at the same time form a terminal drawerssupporting tongue.
It is understood that when the device is used the strain of the button-pieces D on the trousers is principally exerted on the reinforced portion of the suspender-strap A, and consequently there is no danger of the strap breaking under a heavy strain or becoming otherwise disarranged.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Pat-ent- A suspender-end, provided with a strap whose one end is adapted tov be secured to a loop on the shoulder-strap of the suspender and provided with a slot near said end, the said strap being bent upwardly at an intermediate portion toward the end of the strap whereby to form a tab-retaining loop with such end and then doubled upon itself to form a reinforcing-strip, the said reinforcing-strip extending downwardly along the inner face
