SASH-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 648,051, dated April 24, 1900.
I Application filed December 14, 1899. Serial No. 740,270. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J OSIAH BRUCE PAYNE, a subject of Her Majesty the Queen of Great Britain, residing at Granby, county of Shefford, Province of Quebec, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sash-Holders; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to sash-holders, and has for one object to provide a device of this character which is especially adapted for use in connection with storm-windows.
A further object is to provide a sash-holder which is simple in construction, effective in operation, and which may be manufactured at amoderate cost.
To these ends the invention consists in a sash-holder constructed substantially as hereinafter illustrated and described, and defined in the appended claims.
Referring to the drawings, in which similar letters of reference indicate similar parts, Figure l is a view in perspective of a portion of a sash and frame provided with a sashholder constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section taken through the sash-holder, parts being in elevation. Figs. 3 and 4 are views of details.
In the drawings, A represents a windowsash, and A a window-frame, which may be of any usual or preferred form.
Upon the sash A at any suitable point, preferably at each corner, is secured the camplate a, constructed of any suitable metal and provided at each end with suitable supporting-flanges a, through which are adapted to pass suitable securing-screws. The body portion of the cam-plate 6 projects outwardly in the form of a narrow ledge or ridge a the outer edge of which is inclined, so that the bottom thereof is of considerably greater height than the top, thus forming substantially a cam edge a as clearly shown inFig. 4.
Upon the window-frame A is secured a plate B, of any suitable metal, having a central slot Z2, preferably in the form a keyholethat is, having a circular enlargement at its upper portion and terminating in a narrow slot.
The lock-bar Bl is provided at one end with a suitable handle I) and at the other end with a lug b having at its extremity an enlarged head 12 extending transversely with respect to the lug b and substantially parallel with the body portion of the lock-bar and toward the handle end thereof. The body portion 12 of the lock-bar is cut away upon its under surface to provide space for the cam edge a upon which it is adapted to slide and engage. The end of the lock-bar adjacent to the lug b is somewhat thickened and projects beyond the said lug, forming a bearing-surface 12 In assembling the parts of the device above described the plates at and B are secured, respectively, upon the adjacent edges of the window-sash A and the frame A. The window is placed in position and the lock-bar connected with the plate 13. The look-bar is then turned down into engagement with the cam edge a until the parts tightly bind together.
By means of this construction the windowsash is not only securely held in position against accidental displacement, but is tightly jammed against the window-frame, insuring practically an air-tight fit. The resistance of the binding strain is thrown upon the endb of the lock-bar and the head b which are strong and durable.
It is obvious that the device may be used in summer to secure blinds in position.
While I have herein showed a preferred form of carrying my invention into efiect, yet I do not desire to limit myself to such preferred details of construction, but claim the right to use any and all modifications thereof which will serve to carry into effect the objects to be attained by this invention in so far as such modifications and changes may fall within the spirit and scope of my said invention.
I claim 1. A sash-holder, comprising a plate adapted to be secured to a window-frame and having a keyhole-slot; a cam-plate adapted to be secured to the window-sash and having 'a straight inclined rib forming acam-face; and a lock-bar having a short lug, its extremity being provided with an enlarged head, whereby the lock-bar is rotatably and removably held to said plate and adapted to be turned to bearagainst the face of said plate where by the lock-bar is rotatably and removably held to said plate and adapted to be turned into engagement with said cam-face, substantially as described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two Witnesses.
JOSIAH BRUCE PAYNE.
