IMPROVED MACHINE FOR WASHING HIDES.

TO ALL WHOM IT MAY OONCERN:

Be it known that I, 'ALEXANDER ROSS, of Maine, in the county of Broome, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improved Machine for Washing Hides, etc.; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specication.

The present invention relates to a machine or apparatus more especially designed for the washing of hides to prepare them for the lime, the machine consisting of a hollow cylinder or barrel divided into a series of compartments, whether more or less in number, for the reception of the hides which are to be washed, the said cylinder being supplied with the water, or other washing liquid used, through its gudgeons or journals, and arranged to turn, as well as so constructed upon its sides as to allow the said liquid to freely escape from its several compartments, the partitions forming which compartments are provided with a series of ribs extending in the direction of their length for the more perfect operation of the machine. In the accompanying plate of drawings my improved machine is illustrated- Figure 1 being a plan or top view; and Figure 2 a transverse vertical section, taken in the plane of the line x az, fig. 1.

, A, in the drawings, represents a hollow cylinder, barrel, or wheel, which is closed at both ends, but along its side is open at various points of the same, so that when it is revolved the washing liquid, which'is passed through its gudgeons or journals, can enter and freely circulate through the said cylinder or wheel. This cylinder A, in the present instance, is divided into four compartments, B, equal in size and shape, hy means of partition boards C extending in the direction of the length of the cylinder. These boards C are provided with a series of ribs or raised pieces, D, extending in the direction of their length, which ribs are upon both sides ofthe same. In the compartments of the wheel A, constructed as above described, the hides which are to be 'washed are placed, (for which purpose I deem it best to provide onel end of the Wheel with suitable doors for communicating with its several compartments,) when, revolving the said wheel, such hides are thrown about within the wheel from one partition to another, thereby subjecting them-to the action of the washing liquid used in the most perfect and satisfactory manner.

Among the many advantages secured by my improved machine may be here mentioned, first, that the most filthy green slaughter hides can be in a very short time rendered pure and in a t condition for the lime without any previous soaking; second, that for softening and purifying the hides it is most advantageous, as its use'has demonstrated; third, that by the sectional construction of the wheel it is nearly equal to the heaviest hammer in its capacity to soften the hides; fourth, that it is not only much cheaper than the hammer mill now in ordinary use but will not get out of order so quickly, and, furthermore, will work more rapidly, for the reason that those hides which are sullieiently softened can be readily removed, and many other advantages which are self-evident and need no particular mention herein.

Although I have particularly described my machine as applied to the washing of hides, it is obvious that it can be used for other and various articles, such as linen and other cloths.

I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patcnt- 'lhe wheel A for washing hides, closed at both ends, and having its sides open atvarious points', its interior divided into compartments B by close partitions, C, having ribs D extending in the direction of their length; the said wheel provided with hollow journals through which the washing liquid is introduced, when all are constructed and arranged to operate substantiallyas herein shown and described.
