J. W. LULL. EVOLVING CYLINDER FOR TANNING HIDES.
No. 76,784. Patented Apr. 14, 1868.
guilt! glans gotta-t @ffig JOSEPH WQLULL, OF GLEN HOPE. PENNSYLVANIA.
Letters Patent No. 76,784, dated April, 14, 1868.
IMPROVED REVOLVING CYLINDER FOB. TANNING HIDES.
El e .Stlptule month to in tlgese 3mm: grunt nut mating girl at the same.
To ALL W IJIOM 11' MAY CONCERN: I
vBe it known that I, JOSEPH W. LULL, of Glen Hope, in the county of Clearfield, and Stat'eof Pennsylvania, have invented a new and improved Cylinder for Handling Leather and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, suflicient to enable those skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make use of it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part. of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a cross-section, and
Figure 2 a longitudinal vertical section of my invention.
The object of this invention is to facilitate the handling of leather during the process of manufacture in tnnneries. v r
' Inthe-drawings', A isa. hollow wooden barrel or cylinder, rotating on large tubular journals a a, which bear in a stout frame, B: The'cylinder is provided with two tight heads, D D, and around its interior walls with a. large number of projecting pins, e e, a. It is constructed of stav'es, 'held together' by round iron hoops G G, the ends of which are connected by curved couplings. H H, in whichthey are fastened by a screw and nut, so that the hoops can be tightened or loosened to any required degree.
The leather is placed in this cylinder through a trap-door,'-F, and the cylinder is then rotatedon its axis.
While it is thus revolving, the ooze or liquor used in tanning is fed to the leather within, through one 'of the tubular journals,-a, which is smaller; than the other. C is a false head inside of the cylinder,-an,d close to the head through which the liquor'isyintroduced, the object of it being to retain the liquor and feed it slorrly to the leather-through a series of small'holcs, (:00, around its periphery. The tdbuur journal a is made much larger than the-other, to proride a free escape for theliquor from the cylinder aft-er it shall have accomplished its work.
This apparatusis exceedingly simple and eiiective, accomplishing the worlc of a great many hands, and
saving much time and money in the manufacture of the various kinds of leather. It is only necessary to place the leather in it, close the trap-door, andset it in operation by meansof any power that may be convenient. As the cylinder revolves, the projecting pins take up the leather and separate it, preventing its remainingin a. mass at the bottom, and it is thus brought thoroughly in contact with the tanning-liquid as long as it may be necessary to continue the' operation.
Having thus-described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The tanning of leather by means of a revolving cylinder, substantially as described.
2. The cylinder A, constructed with the heads D D, perforated interior head'C, hoops G G fastened hy couplings l-I, door F, and projecting pins .2 e e, substantially as and for ,thepurpose set forth.
JOS. W LULL' Witnesses:
A. 'W. LEE, R. B. LEE.
