SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 645,635, dated March 20, 1900.

To aZZ whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, EDWARD LEON THOMP- SON, a citizen of the United States, residing at WVashington, in the District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Coin-Boxes for the Shipment and Disbursement of Coin; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which forms a part of this specification.

The drawingis a viewin perspective of my coin-box open and partly filled with coin.

The object of my invention is to prevent loss by abrasion or sweating in the shipment of gold coin.

To accomplish this, I construct a shallow rectangular shaped coin-box consisting of three parts made of cast metal, either aluminium, iron, or steel-namely, a deep tray A, which forms the bottom 1, sides 2 and 3, and back at thereof, a side lid 5, and a top lid 6. The tray is provided with any desired number of semicylindrical grooves a, open at their upper ends and closed at their lower ends, of sufficient length to hold any desired number of coins B in column and are of a depth equal to one-half or about one-half the diameter of the coins to be placed therein. The side lid is pivoted or hinged to the bottom of the tray by means of a bolt 0, on which it turns, engaging lugs c thereon and secured in lugs 19 on the tray, so that it may be turned toward and against the bottom 1, sides 2 and 3, and coins in column. The bottom 1 forms a'base for the coins in column to rest upon and closes the lower ends of the grooves. The top lid is pivoted or hinged to the side lid by means of male lugs c thereon engaging female lugs c on the side lid and secured by bolts of", so that it may be turned down upon the coins in column when the grooves are filled with coins and close the upper ends of the grooves. A lug D on the top lid serves as a handle and has a hole d therethrough transverse the top lid. The lugs on the different parts herein mentioned and designated by letter are in one and the same piece of metal therewith.

Throughout the inside of the coin-box, by means of cement in a well-known way, is secured a lining on, of velvet or any other suitable material, that will slightly yield to pressure, so that when the coin-box is closed the coins therein will be cushioned and held against movement one upon another, and thus prevent loss by abrasion or sweating.

Though my coin-boxes are lined throughout expressly as a packing to prevent movement of the coins therein, it is quite evident that gold or other coin might be shipped in these boxes without the lining, and therefore do not limit myself to the lining.

My coin-boxes may be filled with coin and packed in boxes or cases suitable for shipment, and when unpacked, their lids not being secured, they are readily opened and may be placed in a position, as shown in the draw ing, convenient for counting off and disbursing coin.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim therein as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. A metallic coin-box consisting of a deep tray with semicylindrical grooves therein open at their upper and closed at their lower ends, in combination with a side lid secured thereto so as to turn against the tray, and a top lid hinged to the side lid so as to close the upper ends of the grooves, substantially as described.

2. A metallic coin-box consisting of a deep tray with semicylindrical grooves therein open at their upper and closed at their lower. ends, in combination with a side lid secured thereto so as to turn against the tray and a top lid provided with a lug having a hole therethrough hinged to the side lid, substantially as described.

3. As a new article ,of manufacture a coinbox consisting of three parts made of cast metal, namely, a deep tray with semicy1in= drical grooves therein and lugs thereon for securing a side lid thereto; a side lid with lugs thereon for securing it to the tray and to a top lid, and a top lid with lugs thereon for securing it to the side lid and a lug for a handle; all these parts united substantially as shown and described in the form of a shallow rectangular-shaped box and lined throughout with cushioning material.
