TO ALL WHOMIT MAY CONCERN:

Be it known that I, JONATHAN H. GREEN, of Christiansburg, county of Wapello, State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Stoves; and I do hereby declare that the following is a fuil, clear, and exact description thereof. which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification, in which- A Figure 1 is a front view of my improved stove.

Figure 4 is a detail vertical section of the same taken through the lines it x, fig. 3.

Figure 5'is a horizontal section of the same taken through the line g y, fig. 3.

My invention has for its object to furnish an improved stove, so constructed. and arranged that while answering all the ordinary purposes of a store, it may have the additional advantage of being convenient for warming the feet when cold, and it consists in the combination and arrangement of'the sliding grates and the slotted sides of the stove, as hereinafter more fully described.

This store is designed especially for burning wood, but it may be used for burning soft or hard coal. It is represented in the drawings as'heing a box store, but my improvement is equally well adapted to be applied to a cooking or any other kind of a stove.

A is the door of the stove, which, when the improvement is applied to a wood stove, may be made large, as shown in figs. 1, 3, and 5. The door A is applied to the store in the ordinary manner. 0 is the fire-grate, which is made in the ordinary form and applied'to the stove in the ordinary manner. In the sides G of the stove, between the fire-grate C and the bottom H, are formed openings or slots 1, as shown in the drawings. These openings are covered by sliding doors or gratings B. These gratings slide in grooves D and-E, formed in the bottom, and attached to or cast upon the sides G, as shown in fig. 4. F are stops, formed upon the sides G of the stove to stop the gratings or doors B at the proper points for wholly opening or wholly closing the openings I. The button H of the stove projects, as shown in figs. 2, 3, 4, and 5, so as to form a hearth, h, in front of the stove in the ordinary manner, and also aside hearth, h on each side of the stove, as shown in fig. By opening thegrating B and placing the feet upon the sidehearths 71 they may be warmed conveniently and without interfering at all with the ordinary operations or uses of the stove.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- 4 The arrangement of the grate C above the-bottom of the stove, whose sides are open or slotted, and provided with dampers P- to register therewith, and operating substantially as described, as and for the purpose specified.
