Be it known that I, J OHANN KREMENEZKY, a subject of the Emperor of Russia, residing at Vienna, in the Province of Lower Austria, in the Empire of Austria-Hungary, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fastening Devices forthe Heads of Electric Glow-Lamps; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention has relation to the construction of electric incandescent lamps, and more particularly to the means for securing the glass bulb to its metallic socket; and it has for its object the provision of means whereby the connection between the bulb and socket can be effected without screw-threading the interfitting parts and without the use of a cementing material in such manner that the bulb will be locked in its socket against rotary motion as well as against motion in the direction of the longitudinal axis of said socket and yet admit of the ready separation of the parts without injury to either. To these ends that part of the neck of the bulb to which the socket is fitted is made perfectly smooth, as is the internal surface of the socket fitting on said smooth portion of the neck, both the latter and the socket being provided with parts that will interlock in such a manner as to hold the bulb against rotation in and also against motion in the direction of the longitudinal axis of its socket.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a fragmentary sectional elevation of an electric incandescent lamp, illustrating my invention. Fig. 2 is an elevation of Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 1, illustrating a slight modification in the arrangement of the interlocking parts.
As shown in the drawings, the external surface of the neck ct of the bulb a and the internal surface of the socket b, fitting on said neck,are perfectly smooth, with the exception that said neck has at diametrically-opposite points near the inner part of the bulb a radially-projecting boss or teat a the socket b 1898. being provided with corresponding apertures or seats I) for the reception of said teats, one of said apertures forming the terminalof a slot 19 extending from the edge of the socket to said aperture, so that said socket can be slipped onto the neck of the bulb and locked thereto by the teats. By the means described the bulb will be locked to its socket against motion in any direction, and to insure this more perfectly I prefer to close the slot 19 leading to one of the apertures 19, by means of soft solder, as indicated at 0, thus efiectually preventing even slight wabbling of the bulb in its socket, while the soft solder which closes the slot 1) can be readily removed if it becomes necessary to separate the bulb from its socket.
To avoid injury to the neck of the bulb in soldering up the slot 6 I preferably insert between the socket and the neck ofthe bulb a thin metallic plate d, closing the slot from the inside and so preventing the soft solder from coming in contact with the neck a of the bulb, as clearly shown in the drawings.
It is obvious that instead of providing a slot 12 for one of the apertures such a slot may be provided for both, as shown in Fig. 3, and closed as above described, the same results' namely, the holding of the bulb against motion in any direction-bein g attained thereby.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new therein, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination with an incandescent lamp-bulb having teats projecting radially from opposite points of its neck; of a socket provided with seats into which said teats may be sprung, one or both seats forming the ter minal of a longitudinal slot extending to the edge of the open end of the socket, a metallic plate straddling the slot between it and the neck of the lamp, and a button of soft solder applied to the socket and plate to close said slot, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
