Specification of Letters Patent.

Be it known that I, WILLIAM D. PACKARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at farren, in the county of Trumbull and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Base-Cups for Incandescent Lamps, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has for its object the provision of means whereby different sizes of incandescentlamps may be secured to the standard sockets-that is to say, to provide a structure which is capable of uniting a lamp having a neck above the standard size with a base of the standard size. The forms of base in connection with which my invention is employed are those commonly designated as the Edison type, in which the base consists of a hollow threaded metal sleeve carrying at one end an insulated metal button.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side view of a lamp equipped with a base-cup such as I have invented, the lamp and cup being secured to a standard Edison base. Fig. 2 is a vertical central section of the parts, showing the method of attaching the base-cup to the lamp-neck and the base.
In the drawings, 1 indicates a lamp-bulb which is of large size and provided with a reduced neck of a size larger than the standard base shown.
2 is the threaded metal sleeve of the ordinary Edison base.
3 is my novel base-cup, which has a hollow open-ended stem 4, which stem is made in all cases of a standard size adapted to fit the threaded coupling-sleeve of the standard base. The stem is provided with notches 6 on its exterior surface for the purpose of receiving cement 5, by which the base-cup is locked to the metal sleeve. On the other end the basecup is provided with an enlarged receiving portion 7, having a cavity 8, shaped to fit and receive the neck of a lamp-bulb. The receiving or holding end is made in any size. according to the size of the bulbs which it is desired to hold. As above stated, the stem 4: is in every instance maintained at a standard size, as it is an essential characteristic of my invention that the various cups which I manufacture shall all be capable of being fitted to the standard base regardless of the size of lamp-neck which they are adapted to hold. At the base of the holding portion is an opening 9, through which one of the terminals 10 is passed for the purpose of securing it to the couplingsleeve 2. The other terminal 11 is passed through the hollow neck of the base-cup and secured to the metal button 12 of the base when the parts are assembled.

The base-cup which I have above described is preferably made of porcelain, though other suitable material, such as glass, may be employed, and I desire to have it understood that this article is separate and independent in its manufacture of both the lamp and the Edison base with which it is used. The three parts named may be, and usually are, manufactured at different points and subsequently assembled.
One of the main advantages of this structure, aside from the mere decorative feature which it gives to the lamp, is the fact that it affords a practical means for securing a largesize lamp with a large neck to the standard socket without the necessity of enlarging the metal coupling-sleeve of the standard base, which latter expedient has been suggested; but such an alteration in the ordinary base causes the metal sleeve of necessity to project beyond the socket and produces a connection not only unsightly, but one which is dangerous and prohibited by insurance underwriters.
Having thus described my invention, 1 claim As an article of manufacture, a base-cup of porcelain having a centrally-perforated elongated securing-stem adapted to fit in and be cemented to the coupling-sleeve of the ordinary incandescent-lamp base and an enlarged cup-shaped holding portion adapted to receive the neck of a bulb too large to fit within the same base.
