NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WALTER C. FUSNER, OF ALLEGHENY, PENNSYLVANIA.
MANUFACTURE OF INCANDESCENT OR OTHER LAMP GLOBES.
$PEGIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 645,204, dated March 13, 1900.
Application filed, December 9, 1899. Serial No. 739,859. (No specimens.)
1 citizen of the United States of America, residing at Allegheny, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in the Manufacture of Incandescent or other Lamp Globes, of which the following is a specification. My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in the manufacture of incandescent or other lamp bulbs, globes, or chimneys; and it consists of providing the same with a series of coatings, forming integral with the bulb, globe, or chimney a reflector and shade, thereby dispensing with separate appliances to produce the same result.
The object of my invention is to. apply to a bulb, globe, or chimney a coating suitablyai ranged on a portion thereof and forming a reflector, thereby increasing the brilliancyof' the light, whether the same be gas, oil, or electric light, and, further, providing said reflector-coating with a suitable backing, form- Briefly described, my invention consists of first applying a coating of nitrate of silver, nickel, or other metallic reflecting material or composition to the outside of the bulb, globe, or chimney; second, applying a coating of aluminium to the first-named coating; third, applying a coating of amalgam of aluminium to the first two mentioned coatings, and, fourth, a coating of metallic paint of any desirable color. The manner in which my improved coatings are applied for forming a reflector and shade for an incandescent or other lamp bulb, globe, or chimney is as follows: The bulb, globe, or chimney is placed upon a suitable support and a portion of the outside thereof coated with asolution of nitrate of silver, nickel, or other metallic reflecting material or composition. This coating forms the reflector. After said coating has been dried somewhat it is covered witha solution of aluminium for counteracting the heat acting upon the bulb, globe, or chimney when in use. This coating forms the shade. The shade and reflector are then coated with a suitable enamel metallic paint of any desirable color, which acts as a protecting-cover ing for the previously-applied coatings. The bulb, globe, or chimney is then. baked for five or six hours under a sufficient heat not strong enough to melt the glass.
' My improved coatings can be applied in the manner set forth on the outer surface of all shapes of bulbs, globes, or chimneys and when so coated will increase the brilliancy of any light or flame from any carbon or burner, and, furthermore, the said coatings can be applied thereto at a small cost.
The coatings for forming the reflector and shade for bulbs, globes, chimneys, &c., are also adapted for use in connection with arelights, headlights for-locomotives and trolleyca-rs, and in connection where it is intended to increase the brilliancy of a light by the projection of its rays.
It is thought that the many advantages of my improved method for forming integral with a bulb, globe, ,or chimney a reflector and shade can be readily understood from the foregoing description.
or chimney with a reflector, shade and a protecting-covering, which consists first in ap-' plying a coating of nitrate of silver to the outer face of said bulb, globe or chimney, second applying a coating of aluminium to the first-named coating, and third applying a coating of metallic paint to thesaid coatings, substantially as set forth.
2. The herein-described method for providing an incandescent or other lamp bulb, globe or chimney with a reflector, shade and protecting-covering,lwhich consists first in applying a coating of nitrate of silver to the outer face of said bulb, globe or chimney, second applying a coating of aluminium to the firstnamed coating, third applying a coating of metallic paint to the said coatings, and fourth baking the bulb, globe or chimney with the said coatings thereon, substantially as set forth.
3. The herein-described method for providing an incandescent or other lamp bulb, globe or chimney with a reflector, shade and apro- I said bulb, globe or chimney with the said tecting-covering, which consists in applying coatings thereon, substantially as set forth. 10 a coating of suitable metallic reflecting mate- In testimony whereof I affix my signature rial to the outer face of said bulb, globe or in the presence of two witnesses.
chimney, second applying a coating of alu- 'WALTER O. FUSNER. mininrn to the first-mentioned coating, third Witnesses:
applying a coating of metallic paint to the JOHN NOLAND,
said coatings, and fourth suitably baking the E. W. ARTHUR.
