SAFETY-POCKET FOR GARMENTS.

Be it knownthat I, MAX BERNs'rEIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Washington, in the Districtfof Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety-Pockets for Garments g and I` do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as Will enable others skilled inthe art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

The object is to present a safety-pocket combining the greatest simplicity of construction and highest efficiency and durability in use and one that may be added to a garment Without increasing its cost or giving abulky and unfinished appearance to the material of the garment directly covering the pocket, and, furthermore, to effect a saving of material in the construction of said pocket and incidentally in such saving to simplify its construction.

The invention consists in the novel con-V struction and combination of parts of a safetypocket, as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and in which like letters and numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts, Figure lis a view in elevation displaying an ordinary side pocket-blank with the safety-pockets attached thereto. Fig. 2 is a View in vertical section displaying the positions occupied by the pocket proper and the attached safety-pockets. Fig. 3 is a vieWin elevation displayingan ordinary front pocketblank With the safety-pockets attached thereto. Figa is a view, also in elevation, displaying the pocket proper, the inclosed safetypockets being indicated by dotted lines.

Referring to the drawings, A designates an ordinary pocketblank, and B the safetypockets.

The blank A may be of any suitable material and cut to form either a side pocket for trousers, ladies dresses, tbc., as shown in Fig. l, or a front pocket for trousers, coats, jackets, dre., as shown in Fig. 3.

As exhibited in Figs. l and 2, each pocket proper is provided with two safety-pockets,

The safety-pockets may be made of the same I these pockets have been composed of atleast two separate pieces of material, one forming the pocket and the other the closing-flap there# for, so that to present two pockets four sepa# rate pieces of material have been necessary'. Under the Inode of construction of the pockets herein shown'two pockets are produced from three pieces of material, thereby saving both in goods and in the ti me necessary to attachthe ordinary fourth piece in position. This slight saving in time and material may appear immaterial; but When the fact is taken into consideration that if any improvement to a garment involves an added expense of but a few cents or even of one cent to the production price of cheap contract-labor-made articles of apparel such additional cost will prove an effective bar to its adoption, no matter hoW meritorious it might be, as the value for such apparently-trivial saving in time and labor Will be appreciated;

To eect the saving referred to, each safety pocket performs the double function of a pocket proper and a closure or flap for the mouth of the next succeeding pocket through out a se ries of pockets. By reference to Figs. 1 and 2 this will be clearly understood. 'In carrying the invention into effectin this instance three pieces of material (designated, respectively, l, 2, and 3) are cut to the de-` sired form, the bot-tom of each piecebeing shaped to present a flap 4. integral With the pocket and preferably reinforced, as by an added thickness of material held in place by lines of stitches 5, the corners of the flaps being formed to overlap the corners of the ad jacent pocket, as shown at 6, whereby to prevent money in any form from workingout. at these points. The upper edge of the pocket may be reinforced by having the mouth por tion folded upon itself to form a'double thickness of goods and held by a line or lines of stitches 7. The safety-pocket blanks being thus finished, they are laid upon the blank A, with the lower [lap of eachblank overlapping the mouth portion of the next adjacent pocket, and are then secured to the blank A by rows of. side stitches 8 and cross-rows of stitches 9, the latter closing the blank and forming the bottom of the pocket. The sides of the pockets B may be turned under to obviate the presentation of a selvage edge.

A suitable fastening device, such as an ordinary spring glovefastener b, may be employed to secure the flaps over the pocketlnouth, or, if preferred, a button and buttonhole may be employed `for the same purpose. The fastening device of Whatever character employed may be so attached to the parts of a safety-pocket and in such manner as to render it difficult to be operated except by the person Wearing the garment. When the pockets are thus positioned and secured to theblank A,the latter may be folded, as shown in Fig. 4, and its free edges secured together by a line or lines of stitches l0, presenting the pocket proper, which may in the usual manner be secured to the garment.

There the pocket is Vto-be used as a front pocket on trousers, the flap of the upper safety-pocket may be made of the cloth of the trousers, thus giving a finished appearance to the trousers at this point, as usual.

Having thus fully described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
