Be it known that 1, PETER LAWRENCE, of Ouray, in the county of Ouray and State of Colorado, have invented a new and Improved Gun Sight, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

Myinvention relates to gun-sights, and has for its object to provide a sight which may be readily elevated and centered and which is so constructed as to be accurately guided in its movement, while being comparatively simple in construction.

The invention will be fully described hereinafter and the details pointed out in the claims.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

Figure 1 is a side elevation of a gun, showing the breech thereof with my improved sight attached thereto. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the sight proper. Fig. 3 is a vertical section thereof substantially on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2, and Fig. 4 is an enlarged section on the line 4 4 of Fig. 2.

The improved sight comprises a guide-plate A, adapted to be secured in any suitable manner, such as by means of screws a, to the. breech of the gun at one side thereof. This guide-plate is provided upon its inner face with a guideway A, which extends vertically, and into said guideway leads from the outer surface of the plate a vertical slot A In the guideway A is adapted to slide the arm B, having a vertical member B and a horizontal member B The vertical member B has secured to it, at its lower end, a transverse screw O, which is filed off or flattened vertically on both sides, so as to reduce its width to substantially that of the slot A through which said screw is adapted to pass. Upon the screw is fitted a milled nut D, serving to hold the sight-arm B in position after adjustment. The horizontal member B of the arm B is slitted, as shown at B and is adapted to receive at its end a small screw E, extending longitudinally in said slit.

The sight proper, F, is hinged, as at F, to a base G, provided with an aperture or guideway for the passage of the member B of the sight-arm B. A spring H, secured to said base, serves to hold the sight F in either the Serial No. 723,448. (No model.)

4. To facilitate the manipulation of the sight, the same may be provided with a notch F The form of the sight is immaterial. It may be a notch-sight or a peep-sight, as desired.

The base G is held upon the horizontal member B and may be adjusted transversely by sliding it upon said arm, and after adjustment the screw E is tightened, springing the arms of the member B apart, so as to hold the base G in position. Vertical adjustment is efiected by sliding the member B in the guideway A. This movement takes place with great nicety, as said vertical arm B is guided not only in the guideway A, but also by means of the flattened sides of the screw 0 upon the walls of the slot A By thus flattening the sides of the screw I am also enabled to employ a screw of much larger diameter than otherwise, so as to secure a strong construction, notwithstanding the limited width of the screw.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination of the vertically-adj ustable sight-arm having a horizontal member split at one end, a sight adjustable transversely on said horizontal member, and an expanding-screw arranged in the slit of the sight arm.

2. The combination of the plate having a guideway and a longitudinal slot leading into said guideway, the sight-arm fitted to slide in said guideway, the screw secured to the sight-arm and projecting through the slot of the plate, said screw being cut away on opposite sides so as to present fiat surfaces ad-- jacent to the longitudinal walls of said slot, a clamping-nut rotatable on said screw, and a sight carried by the sight-arm.

3. The combination of the sight-arm having a vertical sliding member and means for clamping the same, a horizontal member, a sight-base adjustable transversely on said horizontal member, means for securing the base in position, and a sight pivoted to said 100 base.
