To-aZZ whom it may co'ncern Be it known that I, GUSTAF A. Bnonsrsorr, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Portsmouth,in the county of Norfolk and State of Virginia, havemade': certain new and useful Improvements in Aiming Devices, of which the following is a. specification.
My invention is an improvement in: aiming devices, and has for its object to provide a device of the=character specified, for use with guns, for acquiring accuracy in aiming without the expenditure of ammunition.

In the present embodiment of the invention a staff 1 is provided having at one end a socket 2 for engaging over the barrel 3 of a rifle, and the socket has a slot for receiving the front sight 4: of the rifle. A clamping ring 5 is arranged on the socket and set screws 6 are threaded through the clamping ring to engage the barrel to hold the staff in place. A socket 7 is fitted over the other end of the staff, and a target holder 8 in the form of a substantially rectangular frame is supported by this socket. A target supporting frame 9 is mounted to move in the holder transversely of the barrel, and the frame is moved by a screw threaded rod 10 which is journaled in the frame, passing through a nut 11 in the frame, and it will be evident that when the rod is turned the target supporting frame will be moved laterally with respect to the barrel.
The frame 8 is mounted for vertical movement, a rod 12 being connected with the bottom .of the frame and extending downwardly through the socket 7 and the staff, and the lower end of the rod is threaded and engaged by a nut 13 which is ournaled in the staff.
It will be noticed that the nut has an annular groove at the staff and an annular rib 15 engages the groove to rotatably connect the nut with the staff.
The frame has a depending guide pin 16, which passes through an opening in an extension 17 at one side of the socket, and the guide pin prevents rotary movement of the frame 8 when it is moved vertically;
The frame 9 has guides on opposite sides of the frameS, and one of these guides has a target 18, a card 19 beingmounted in the other. The target is of celluloid or like transparent material and has the usual circles formed upon. it as shown in Fig. 5. A bracket 20 extends upward from the outer end of the socket and in the outer face of the bracket is provided a recess 21. A cap 22 is arranged within the recess, and the cap has a needle 23, which is adapted to puncture the card, the needle extending through an opening in the bracket at the bottom of the recess.
A coil spring encircles the needle within the cap, between the bottom of the recess and the cap, and normally forces the cap and the needle outwardly, the movement of said cap and needle being limited by a cross pin 25.
In use the muzzle of the rifle rests on the instructors shoulder, the rifle being held in the usual manner bythe person being instructed. The person being instructed aims through the sight and gives the directions to the instructor for moving the target. The target is moved to the right or left by means of the azimuth screw 10, and lifted and lowered by means of the screw 12 and the nut 13, as directed, until the person being instructed is satisfied that the sights a re alined on the target. He then directs the instructor to mark. who presses the cap or key puncturing the card, and the mark shows the position of the target in relation to the sight.
The device can be used for continuous practice, the markings on the card showing the accuracy of the aim.
I claim 1. A device of the character specified, conr prising a staff having means for connecting the same to a gun, a frame having means for supporting a target and a card in pan allel planes, a guide frame for the target frame, means in connection with the frames for moving the target holding frame later ally with respect to the staff, means in connection with the guide frame and the staff for moving said guide frame vertically, and for preventing swinging movement of the frame, a means for puncturing the card, said means being at the center of the target, and comprising a key provided with a needle supported by the staif and mounted to move toward and from the card, and a spring normally pressing the key away from the card.

A device of the character specified, comprising a staif having means for connecting the same to a gun, a frame having means for supporting a target and a card in parallel planes, a guide frame for the target frame, means in connection With the frames for moving the target holding frame laterally With respect to the staff, means in connection With the guide frame and the staff for moving said guide frame vertically, and for preventing swinging movement of the frame, and means for puncturing the card, said means being at the center of the target.

A device of the character specified comprising a staff having means for connecting the same With the muzzle of a gun, a frame for supporting a target and a card in parallel planes, a connection between the frame and the staff for moving the frame vertically, means for moving the frame laterally and means at the end of the staff for puncturing the card.

A device of the character specified, comprising a staff having means for connecting the same with the muzzle of a gun, means on the staff for supporting a target and a card in parallel planes approximately perpendicular to the barrel ofthe gun, means for moving the target With respect to the barrel, and means at the end of the staff for puncturing the card.
