IVILLIAM G. LANDERS, OF BOSTVICK, GEORGIA.
PLOW-CLEVIS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters .Patent No. 643,510, dated February 13, 1900. vAppiimioniueaJuly14J 1899. sentira. 723.791- (Nomadel To all whom t may concer/1.:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM G. LANDEEs, of Bostwick, in the county of Morgan and State of Georgia, have invented anew and useful Improvement in Plow-Glevises, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is an improvement in clevises for plows and thelike and the invention consists in certain novel constructions and combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of my clevis as in use. Fig. 2 is a detail view of the body of the clevis. Fig. 3 is a detail View of the slotted keeper-plate. Fig. 4 is a cross-section on about line 4 4 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 5 is a detail View of the hook-bolt.
The body A of the clevis has the top and bottom bars A A secured to the beam B by the bolts C and C' and the front or end bar D, which is provided with the vertical slot E, opening from front to4 rear. is inserted through the slot E and secured by the bolt G. The bolt G is headed at one end G and engaged at such endwith one side of the end bar D of the body A. The other end of the bolt G extends through a vertical slot. Hin the keeper-plate H. This plate His iitted alongside the end bar D and is provided with the slot H', which is arranged in rear of said bar D, as will be understood from Figs. l and 4. This slot receives the bolt G and permits its adjustment vertically to any desired degree.
In securing the keeper-plate to the clevis it is held from vertical displacement by providing at its opposite ends the lugs H2 H2,
which lap above and below the body A of the' clevis, as shown, and, together with the bolt G, hold the keeper-plate firmly in place. The parts can be readily operated to permit the adjustment of the singletree up or down to regulate the depth of the plowing and can be quickly secured in any desired adj ustment.
By means of the slot E the whiftletree-iron can be connected directly with the bolt G, thus dispensing with an extra lap-ring or connecting-bolt and shortening the distance between the plow-beam and singletree, thus causing the plon7 to run steadier.
The thill-iron F' In connecting the headed end of the bolt G 5o with the clevis the latter may have at its side opposite the plate H an integral plate I, slotted at I for the passage ofthe bolt, or the said bolt may be hooked at G2 to engage the clevis, as shown in Fig. 5.
.The improvement may also be embodied in a wagon-clevis to hold the singletree to the doubletree, thus doing away with the lapring and holding the singletree steady, so it will not strike the horses hind legs in going downhill, also getting the horse nearer the load, making the draft easier.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. An improved clevis having an end bar provided with a Vertical slot leading from front to rear and having a vertically-slotted keeper-plate fitted to one side of the end bar, the slot in such side plate opening laterally, and the cross-bolt extending through such lateral slot and connected with the opposite side of the clevis and adapted to secure a link passed through the slot in the end bar of the clevis substantially as set forth.
2. A clevis having its end bar provided with a vertical slot adapted for the insertion of the thill-iron and having a vertical keeper-slot at one side in rear of said end bar, and the crossbolt passed through the keeper-slot and connected with the opposite side of the clevis and adapted to secure the link passed through the slot in the end bar of the clevis substantially as set forth.
3. A clevis comprising the body portion havn hl WILLIAM G. XSLANDERS.
