Description

Di R. G0-ULD, OF CHESTIRTOWTN, NEW YORK.
l Laim Patenten. (new, .flared 21pm 30, 1867.
IMPROVEMENT IN HYDRANIS.
I 'TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, D. R. GOULD, of Ghest-ertown, in the county ot` Vtarren, and in the Statelot' New York, have invented new and useful improvements in Hydrants; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon. In the annexed drawings, making part ot' this specifica-tion- A represents the box which covers or contains the hydrant. Near the bottom of this box A is situated a metallic case, B, which is provided with a top, B. When the top B is secured upon the case there is a chamber within the vessel thus formed, similar to the shape of the two cones with their bases joined together. Within the chamber of case B is situated a valve, F, the shape of which is made similar to that of the chamber, but somewhat smaller, so as to be allowed play. E represents a rod or stem, which passes through the cover B', the valve F, and through the ease B at its bottom. The openingthrough which the`stem passes in the bottom of the case is made larger than the diameter of the stem, so as to allow ot" lthe escape of water around said stem when necessary. C represents a pipe which connects with thze case B on one side, and D a pipe which connects with it on the other; C representing the supply and D the discharge pipe. In one side of the valve F is formed a groove, a, which, when the valve is closed, opens a communication from the discharge pipe D to the opening around the stem E in the bottom of caseB t0l allow ofthe escape ofwvnstc water. 6 represents a plate on stem E, beneath the case B, which is supported upon a coiled-wire spring. anwhioh is for the purpose of closing the waste-opening in the bottom of the case when the valve is raised. The upper end of the rod E has its bearing in an arm, K, on a'. plate, J, which said plate is secured to the box covering the hydrant. L represents a lug' upon thestem E, and G a spring which is confined around the stem between the arm K and said lug L. The spring is for the purpose of pressing the stemwith its valve down firmly in the case B. H represents a lever, one end of which catches under the lug L, and the other end of which is operated uponl by means ot' a camhandle, I. The valve F is raised and lowered by means of the stem E. When said valve is down it shuts of? the water from the supply -pipe C, and the waste water from pipe D runs down through groove a and out, around the stem E, through the opening in the bottom of the case B. When the valve F is up this water from pipe C passes through case B and up through discharge pipe D. 'lhe handle I-operates upon the lever II, and said lever operates the rod or stem E in one direction, while the spring G operates it in the other; one opens and the other closes the valve. l
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, s-
I. The valve F, constructed as described, and provided with the groove a, and arranged in connection with the case B and the discharge pipe D, substantially as and for the-purpose specified.
2. The arrangement of the plate b, supportedupon the spring d, and used in combination with the opening in the bottom of the case B and the stem E, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 8th day of February, 1867.
D. R. GOULD.
