Description
GEIQ,
C. J. CO\VPERTHWAITE, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
HYDRANT.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, C. J. COWPER- THWAITE, of the city and county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Hydrant; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and eXact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specication, in which- Figure l, is a vertical section of my improvement the plane of section being through the center. Fig. 2, is an end View of he lever, by which the hydrant is operate Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the two figures.
To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct my invention, I will proceed to describe it.
A, represents a cylindrical metallic case, the lower end of which is inserted in the ground a suitable distance. To the lower part of the case A, a metallic pipe B, is attached said pipe communicating with the interior of the case A. The inner surface of the bottom of t-he case A, is of conical form as shown clearly in Fig. 1, and av vertical opening (a), is made through its center. This opening communicates with the pipe B.
C, is a vertical tube or cylinder adjoining the case A. The lower end of this tube or cylinder communicates with the pipe B, and a cock D, is inserted in the pipe B, said cock having a rod E, attached to it which rod passes up through the tube or cylinder C, and has a square formed upon its upper end. The pipe B, is connected in any proper manner with the lead pipe which communicates with the main. And by merely turning the rod E, t-he hydrant may be connected with or disconnected from the main.
F, is a cylinder, the lower end of which has a conical recess made in it to it over the conical projection on the bottom of the case A. This recess has an annular strip of india rubber or leather fitted in a groove or recess made to receive it, the leather or rubber forming a water tight joint between the cylinder and conical projection. Wit-hin the cylinder a conical valve G, is iitted. The valve is attached to a rod H, which has a lever I, secured to its upper end, the outer end of said lever passing through a box J,
attached to the side of the case A, said box having projections (b), on one side.
The upper end of the cylinder F, has a circular piece of india rubber K, or other suitable elastic material attached to it, which rubber forms a water tight cap or covering to the cylinder. This cap or covering is a short distance above the seat (c), of the valve G, a space (d), being between them. The rod H, passes through the cap or covering K, the cap or covering being connected to the rod by nuts (e).
L, is the outlet pipe the lower end of which communicates with the space (d), in the cylinder F, the upper end of t-he pipe L, projects through the side of the case A, and is bent or curved downward as shown in Fig. 1.
The upper end of the cylinder F, has a rod M, attached to it. This rod is bent in zig zag form and its upper end is iitted in a recess in the cap N, of the case A, said cap being secured to the case by screwbolts (e), or in any proper manner. When the cap is secured on the case the cylinder F, will be firmly fitted on the conical projection on the bot-tom of the case by the rod M, and as this rod is bent in Zig zag form it is allowed a certain degree of elasticity if necessary so that the cap N, may be nicely adjusted to the case and the cylinder F, at the same time snugly fitted on the conical projection on the bottom of the case A.
O, is a small valve in the cylinder F, which valve is operated by a horizontal arm (f), attached to the rod H. This valve O, is open when the valve G, is closed, and it is closed when the valve G, is open.
By elevating t-he outer end of the lever I, and placing it on one of the projections (b), in the boX J, the valve G, will be depressed, and t-he water will pass through the seat (c), into the pipe L. The elasticity of the cap or covering K, permitting the rod I-I, to be moved or vibrated the requisite distance, by merely freeing the lever I, Jfrom the projection (b), the weight of the outer end of the lever in connection with the pressure of the water under the valve Gr, will close t-he valve Gr, and as the valve O, then opens, the waste water is allowed to escape from the pipe L, and the interior of the cylinder F.
By the above improvement, the hydrant may be readily connected with and discon nected from the main by merely turning the rod E, and in case the valves or any parts of the hydrants require to be repaired or examined they may all be Withdrawn from the case A, by removing the top or cap N. The case A, does not require to be disturbed in any case, and any person of ordinary ability or ingenuity may make the necessary repairs that may be required from time to time. The usual labor of digging, soldering, renewing of stop cock etc. is dispensed with.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- Y n The cylinderr F, tted over the conical projection on the bottom of the case A, 15'
secured on the conical projection by means 20 of the bent rod M, and cap N, of the case A, substantially as shown for the purpose specified.
C. J. COVPERTHWAITE.
