Description

UNITED sTATEs PATENT oEEIcE.
WILLIAM BRAMWELL, OF NENV YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR 'lO SAMUELP. AYRES, OF NEW ROCHELLE, NEW YORK.
METHOD OF INGASING HYDRANTS.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 17,588, dated .Tune 9, 1857.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM BRAMwELL, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented, made, and applied to use a new and useful Improvement in Fire-Hydrants; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing, making part of this specification, wherein- Figure l, is a side elevation; Fig. Q, is a vertical section; Fig. 3, is an elevation of the top of my said hydrantand Fig. 4, is aV plan of the base of the same.
Similar marks of reference denote corresponding parts.
Hydrants used for supplying water in cases of fire are very often injured in use, and often become leaky from injury or some derangement of the working parts, and in these cases the hydrant has to be removed for repairs by digging down around the same at considerable cost and trouble; and in winter time the excavation is often almost impossible to perform, and consequently hydrants are often necessarily permitted to leak sometimes for` several months before they can be repaired, causing a constant overflow' of water which in such weather freezes and obstructs the street.
The nature of my said invention consist-s in providing a vertical pipe extending up to the level of the sidewalk or street from the branch pipe to the main water pipe in such a manner that the hydrant is entered therein and attached thereto at or near the level of the sidewalk, while packing between the hydrant and the said inclosing pipe is sufiiciently below the surface to be out of the reach of frost, so that in ca'se of injury to the hydrant the same can be immediately removed, after the water has been shut off by a stop cock to the main in the usual Inanner, by simply disconnecting the hydra-nt from said case or pipe at the surface of the sidewalk, and lift-ing the hydrant out, thereby the excavation around the hydrant is dispensed with.
In the drawing a, is the pipe from the main water pipe.
b, is a bend or elbow at the lower end of the vertical pipe or case c, which extends to the level of the street or sidewalk (at d() e, is a seat formed at the junction of the pipe c, and bend Z), on which a rubber washer or cushion f is placed, receiving the lower end of the hydrant pipe g- The hydrant itself is formed with the valve z., rod 2', screw 7c, and nozzle or screw plug Z, in the usual manner.
m, is the square, round or other ornamental casing, forming the inclosure to the parts of the hydrant, which may be of any desired shape. n, is the base of said casing which sits over the upper end of the pipe c, and this pipe c, is provided with lugs or projections o, o, see Figs. 3 and 4, receiving the screw bolts y), p, passing through the base n, and having nuts above said base.
It will now be apparent that the joint between the lower end of the hydrant pipe g and the seat c, is made perfectly tight by the elastic cushion j', of india rubber or si1ni lar material, on screwing up the said screws 7), p2, and in case of accident to the hydrant the who-le thereof can be lifted out by removing the nuts of said screws 79, p.
q, is a valve closing upward by the ressure of water when the same is admltted into the pipe y, but opening again so as to allow the water to waste away out of said pipe g to prevent freezing; after the water is shut off, and an opening should be left in the casing or pipe e, to allow said water to soak away into the earth.
That I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- The casing or pipe c, with its seat c, and elastic washer f, in combination with the hydrant pipe g and-screws p, p, substan tially 1n the manner and for the purposes specified.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my signature this fourteenth day of May, 1857.
WM. BRAMVVELL.
