Description

Patented Nov. 1, 1921.
INVENTOR 07-712 A TTOR/VEYS WITNESSES 524K972 PATENT OFFIQE.
NATALIE FOR/NI, OF SANTA ROSA, CALIFORNIA.
WATER-METER BOX.
1,395,807. Specification of Application filed January 4 To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NATALIE FORNI, a citi zen of the United States, and a resident of Santa Rosa, in the county of Sonoma and State of California, have invented a new and Improved ater-l! eter Box. of which the following is a full, clear, and exact descrip tion.
This invention relates to protecting boxes for meters and has for an object to provide an improved construction which is extremely simple but suificiently strong to protect a water meter against the pressure of the earth when buried to a limited depth.
Another object of the invention is to pro-- vide a protecting box for water meters wherein a removable cover or cap is provided and reinforced sides formed to easily accommodate the box and the connections thereto while at the same time protecting the box against sand or earth pressure.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a top plan view of a protecting box embodying the invention.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section through Fig. l on line 2 2.
Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view through Fig. l on line 3-8.
Referring to the accompanying drawings by numerals, 1 indicates the walls or casing of the box and 2 the covering or lid. As shown in Figs. Qand 3 the covering orlid2 is formed from solid concrete though it could be reinforced if desired. The side walls or casing 1 is formed from concrete in which a wire mesh reinforcement 3 is embedded whereby the walls are strengthened to resist lateral pressure. Preferably, the con crete of which the covering plate 2 and the casing 1 are made is mixed with some good water proofing compound, as for instance, the compound disclosed in my former pat- Letters Patent. Patented Nov. 1, 1321.
, 1921. Serial N0. 435,041.
ent. By mixing a water proofing compound with the cement the water meter i will be protected against moisture unless the moisture is sufiicient in quantity to pass in through the openings 5 and 6 formed in the ends of the casing These openings are designed to accommodate the connecting pipes 7 and 8 of the meter 4. I
As shown in Fig. 1 the casing 1 and also the covering plate 2 are elliptical in form so as to resist by its formation crushing action. In testing the casing 1 an annular extending shoulder or flange 9 is provided on which the plate 2 rests. If desired, this plate may be provided with a notch or opening 10 so as to receive the fingers or an implement when it is desired to remove the cover. When it is desired to use the protecting water meter box shown in the drawing, it is only necessary to place the same over the meter box l manually and then apply the covering plate 2. In case the box should be used in a cold climate the openings 5 and 6 could be filled with any suitable filling matter after the box has been placed in position though this ordinarily is not necessary when the box is covered with dirt.
hat I claim is A water meter protecting box comprising a concrete casing. a substantially annular continuous reinforcing metallic member embedded in said casing. said casin having an annular flange extending inwardlv near the.
upper end, a pair of pipe receiving notches near the lower end, and a covering plate of concrete adapted to rest on said flange, said plate having a tool receiving notch extending partially therethrough whereby the plate may be bodily removed at any time while presenting continuously a solid cover.
