INVENTOR.
A TTORNEYfi UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
,LEO' 0F PASADENA, CALIFORNIA.
ADJUSTABLE SHUT-OFF BOX FOR GAS AND WATER.
Application filed August 9,
To all whom it may concerns Be it known that I, LEO G. HAAsn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pasadena, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Shut- Off Boxes for Gas and ater, of which the following is a specification. U
My object is to make an ad ustable shutoff box for gas and watermeters, and my invention consists of the, novel features herein shown, described and cla med.
Figure 1 is a perspective of an adplstable shut-off box for gas and water meters embodying the principles of my invention.
Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation showing the adjustable shut-off box in poslt on for use, the view being taken on the hue 2 -2 of Fig. 3 and looking in the direction indicated by the arrows.
Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional detall on theline 33 of .Fig. 2 and looklng upwardly as indicated by the arrows.
The gas or Water pipe 1 ls-usually laid some distance below the surface 20f the sidewalk and has a shut-off valve 3. The distance from the )ipe l to the surface varies and I provi e an adjustable shut-oil box comprising the lower section 4 and the upper section 5 telescop ng upon the lower section 4:, so as to readily make the upper end face f the boxlevel with the surface 2 of the sidewalk. l
The lower section 4 is rectangular in plan and has notches 7 extending from its lower edges to receive the pipe 1 and has a vertical chamber 8 large enough to provide a ready access to the valve The sections 4' and 5 are preferably made of cement or concrete.
A series of notches 9 is formed in two diagonally opposite corners of the lower section 4, said corners having beveled outer faces 10 atangles of 45 to the main side faces, and said notches 9 being in horizontal planes 7 p AU-shaped yoke 11 is formed of iron and Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 1, 1921. 1919.: Serial No. 316,446.
faces 15 at its corners tofit the faces 10.
The outer section 5 rests'upon the yoke 11 and by moving the yoke 11 up or down the aggregate height of the face (5 maybe made to suit. A seat flange 16 is formed at the top of the section 5 and the cover 17 fits upon the flange 16, there being an opening 15% through the cover.
In the practical operation when the distance from the ground surface 19 to the surface of the sidewalk has been determined, the yoke 11 is placed in the proper notches. the portion 5 slid down upon the portion against the yoke 11 and the box set upon the surface 19, earth tamped around the box and the cover 17 applied and the job is com-- plete.
Preferably, the yoke 11 fits in a recess 20 extending into the lower end of the section 5, so that'the flange 21 will cover the yoke and reduce the liability of the yoke ex panding to let the upper section 5 down.
Various changes may be made without departing from the'spirit of my invention. as claimed.
An adjustable shut-off box for gas and water conduits comprising a lower section rectangular in form composed of concrete having notcheson diagonal corners, a yoke adapted to fit the notches, and an upper -section formed of concrete to fit over the lower section slidably and rest upon the yoke, the upper section being provided with a suitable cover.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specificatmn.
LEO G. HAASE.
