Description

NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
- CLEAVELAND F. DUNDERDALE, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVED APPARATUS FOR GENERATING AND CARBURETING GASES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 96,565, dated November 9, 1869.
To all whom t't may concern:
Be it known that I, CLEAVELAND F. DUN- DERDALE, of the city, county, and State of New York, having invented new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Generating and Carbureting Gas, patented to me in Letters Patent of the United States, bearing the dates ofJ une l, 1869, and numbered 90,644, and July 27, and numbered 92,943, and that I have made further additional improvements on the same; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, that will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a sectional view of the original apparatus, withl theV additional improvements in detail. v
The nature of my invention consistsin improved means of withdrawing the sedimentsulphate of iron or zinc-from the tank which contains the 'diluted acid and Water without removing the said acid `and water from the tank which contains it.
In the drawings, A is a bottom made with a slope like a funnel or other desirable form for causing the sediment to collect in the drain or pipe B as it is deposited in the bottom of the tank, so that it can be drawn .off bya gate cock or faucet, as shown at D, without the liquid'in the tank escaping until the sediment has first been abstracted. The sediment is shown collected in the funnel by the dotted lines marked C.
It has been found necessary heretofore to remove the body of the liquid rst before the sediment could` be removed; but this arrangement avoids this by causing it to collect in the pipe of the funnel, owing to greater gravity than the liquid, so that it can be allowed to escape in quantities, as may be desired, by opening the gate or faucet cock, as shown.
Having thus fully described'my improvement, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
Tlie sloping or funne-shaped bottom with drain-conduit and cock, as shown at A, B, and D, when used in a gas-generator, constructed substantially as described, and operating as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony that the above-described new and useful improvementin hydrocarbon-gas machines are claimed by me as my invention I have subscribed my name this 10th day of September, 1869.
CLEAVELAND F. DUN DERDALE.
