GLEAVELAND F. DUNDERDALE, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVED MACHINE FOR GENERATING AND CARBUR'ETING GAS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N o. 92,93, dated July 27, 1869.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GLEAVELAND F. DUN- DERDALE, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Machines for Generating and Carbureting Gas; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the anneXed drawing, making part of this specication, and tothe letters of reference marked thereon.
The figure represented shows a vertical section of my improved apparatus.
The nature of this invention consists in certain improvements on a similar apparatus, for which Letters Patent were yissued to me on the lst day of June, 1869, and relates to certain means for checking the back iiow of the l gas contained in the gasometer, or some of its compartments, when any of the screw-caps are removed to supply the apparatus either with hydrocarbon liquid or with the pieces of Vzinc or iron turnings; also, in the arrangement of a tlange or skirt around the perforated chamber containing the pieces of metal, to prevent the escape of the hydrogen; and, further, in the arrangement of a receptacle attached to the outlet-pipevior the gas, for the purpose of receiving any moisture that may be carried over with the gas, preventing thereby its collection in the pipes and choking the same.
The construction and operation of this apparatus being the same as described in the above-mentioned Letters Patent, l shall only describe those parts which are new and form part of my improvement.
Into the ends of the pipes F, which are there turned upward, I arrange self-acting valves a, through which the hydrogen gas from the chamber D can freely escape into the hydrocarbon liquid contained in the compartment E, but which will close immediately to prevent the hydrocarbon liquid from filling said pipes. 'w represents similar valves placed over the holes m, through the external walls of the chamber E, which permit the carbureted gas to escape into the cover or gasometer B, but prevent a back flow and escape of gas whenv the cap G is removed to supply the hydrocarbon liquid into the compartment E.

This vessel is for receiving any condensed moisture or vapor that may be carried over into the pipe L with the gas, preventing its collection in the pipes and choking the same. The faucet is for drawing o" the same. 4
W is a man-hole for removing any deposit or sediment that may collect in the bottom of the tank A, by which the same can be removed without taking olf the cover or allowing the gas to escape.
What I claim as my invention, and desireA to secure `by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of valves a and fw with the hydrocarbon chamber and pipes, the flange or skirt N, surrounding the perforated `compartment of the chamber D, and the Wire-cloth .c on the inside of said chamber, the screw-cap or man-hole W, and the condensing-receptacle M, arranged and ccombined and used in connection with a gasgenerator, substantially as herein specified and described, and for the purpose set forth.
