UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALONZO FRANK RICHARDSON, OF NE\V YORK, N. Y.
COMB.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 642,004, dated. January 23, 1900. Application filed November 27, 1899. Serial No. 738,421. No model- To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Anonzo FRANK R1011- ARDSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Toilet Combs, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to toilet combs; and the objects of the same are to provide a comb with round teeth or teeth which are circular in cross-section and to also form the notches between the ,teeth where they are joined to the comb-back of a curved or circular shape both transversely and longitudinally of the comb, the object of such construction being 7 that the comb may be drawn through the hair without removing healthyfilaments from the scalp.
As usually constructed the notches between the teeth of toilet combs are angular, and the teeth being set quite closely together the tendency of such combs is to pull out good healthy hairs which may become wedged in or clamped between the teeth. A combconstructed in accordance with my invention can be drawn through the hair without catching or holding any of the filaments, as all the points of contact are round and smooth and the teeth are set at such distance apart as to prevent wedging between them.
I attain the objects referred to by means of the construction shown in the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which r Figure 1 is a side view of my invention. Fig. 2'is a longitudinal section on the line a: m, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a vertical section of the %omb, the section being taken on the liney 'y,
Like numerals of reference designate like parts wherever they occur in the diiterent views of the drawings.
In the drawings the numeral 1 designates the comb-back, which may be of any suitable shape, either curved or straight, and may be provided with a handle, as 2. The teeth 3 of my comb are round in cross-section and gradually taper from the upper portion 4 to the point 5. Where each tooth joins the comb-back an enlargement 6 is formed, and this enlargement is substantially circular in cross-section and may taper from the center in opposite directions to form a somewhat elliptical figure in side View, the teeth emerging from said enlargements without causing abrupt angles or corners to catch the hair. The notches 7 between the teeth are arched or curved longitudinally of the comb, and the side walls 8 adjacent the notches are rounded out or curved transversely of the comb, as shown at 9, Fig. 3, to form smooth surfaces, which will not have a tendency to pull out or break the hair.
A comb constructed in accordance with my invention can be used to advantage by persons having a luxuriant growth of hair of finev texturewithout breaking or removing any. of the healthy filaments.
Having thus fully described myinvention, what I claim is- A comb having round, tapering teeth, circular. enlargements at the base of said teeth, and arched notches between the teeth, said notches being rounded or curved in cross-section, for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ALONZO FRANK RICHARDSON.
