LABEL HOLDER.

FREDERICK H. KELLY, OF AU SABLE, MICHIGAN.
LABEL-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 641,970, dated J' anuary 23, 1900. Application filed May 24, 1899. Serial No. 718,086. (No model.)
To all whom it Wray concer-m Be it known that I, FREDERICK H. KELLY, a citizen of the United States, residingat Au Sable, in the county of Iosco and State of Michigan, have invented a certain new and useful Label-Holder, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to label-holders and is an improvement upon the label-holder described in my Patent No. 623,023, dated April 15, 1899.
In the use of my patented invention Ihave discovered that in removing the labels from between the jaws of the spring-clamp there is liability of a number of labels or cards slipping out at the same time. 4
The object of my invention is to overcome this dificulty;l and to this end my invention consists in the combination, with a sliding spring-clamp, of a gage-stop attached to and movable with the clamp for holding all eX- cept one outer card or label between the jaws and preventing the removal of more than one at a time.
In the drawings forming a part of this specification, Figure l is a perspective of a case of any suitable character, and Fig. 2 is a section through the case and the holding mechanism.
1 is a case having a pocket or compartment Within it for the clamp or holder operating mechanism, as shown in Fig. 2 of the draw- 1ngs.
2 is a clamp made and operated substantially in the manner of that described in my patent, having a shank 3 passing through the front wall of the case or pocket and operated to draw the clamping-fingers toward the case by means of a spring 4.. The shank of the slide is bifurcated at one end for the reception of the spring Ll, and the forks at the side of the spring carry standards 5 5, suitably supported by braces 6 6, so as to be entirely firm and rigid, and above and parallel with the shank 3 is a sliding rod or bar 7, which projects through the front of the casing just far enough to hold or prevent removal verti cally of all of the cards or labels except one. This bar constitutes a gage and a stop. It gages the thickness of the mass of labels and serves as a stop to prevent the removal of more than one at a time by the application of the thumb or finger to the surface of the outer label. The end is slightly beveled or inclined, as shown, so that a card or label may be readily slipped away from those behind it and out from the jaws of the clamp.
In operation as the labels are exhausted one by one the clamp and the gage are moved inward just to the extent of the thickness of the labels remaining between the jaws and will always permit of the ready removal of a single label, and only one.
Having described my invention, what I claim is- In label-holders, the combination of a case, a spring-operated clamp mounted in the case, and a gage-stop projecting outside the plane of the case above the clamp attached to and movable with the clamp, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I aftlx my signature in presence of two witnesses.
FREDERICK H. KELLY. Witnesses:
