, To AL'L WHoM IT-MAY c'oNcERN:
Be it known that I, HENRY L. BUDD, of the city and State of New York, have invented, made, and appliedto use a certain new and usefullImprovement in Grate-Bars For Furnaces; and I do hereby declare the following Ito he a full, clear, and exact description of the said invention, reference being had to the annexed drawing,
making part of this specication, wherein- Figure 1 is a plan of two of said grate-bars. Figure 2 is a sideview of one bar; and Figure 3 is a section at the line :v fr. Similar marks of reference denote the same parts.
' The action 0i' heat upon furnace-bars is not equal. Sometimes the middle of the bar will be burnt out While'r the ends are uninjured;' at other times the' bar will be warped upwards in the centre, rendering the furnace- Igrate uneven.
The nature of my said invention consists ina. series of cross-bar sections supported on and. connected with 'a longitudinal bar, that is supported in the furnace, said cross-bars being intel-locked so as to support each other. By this construction one or more of the cross-hars may be removed when burnt out, without the loss of the other uniujured parts ofthe bar, and the Ilongitudinal sustaining bar being below the fire-bed is not unduly vheated or warped.

Invthe drawing, a is the longitudinal bar supported at its ends in suitable notched bearers. b 6 are the sectional cross-bars setting upon and attached to the bar a, and interlocking with each other. I have shown the cross-hars as formed with a mortise, l, for the bar a to pass through, with side-pieces 2 2 sustaining the fire surface 3, so as to form a triangle, and at 4 4 the bars are intel-locked. The sections are kept together by keys or pins passing through the ends of the bar a, and I introduce at suitabledistances apart sections, AI, formed with lugs 5 5, which7 coming against corresponding ylugs in the contiguous' bars, leave longitudinal openings between the'lespective grate-hars: The. surfaces 3 rnay be grooved, if desired, and the side-pieces 2 2 should he lrounded on their edges and made as'thin as consistent with the required strength so as to give free air spaces. The supports 2 of the bars may be omitted every alternate bar', as the interlocking 4 Iwill supportthe interme- What I claim, aud desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A. furnace grate-bar formed of a series of sections, b, attached to the longitudinal bar a, said sections inter-v locking and being constructed substantially as speclied. Y
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my signature this twenty-eighth day of February, A. D. 1867.
HENRY L. BUDD.
