Description

UNITED STATES PATENT FFIGE.
GEORGE H. CLARKE AND OHAS. VAN WAGENEN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNORS TO GEORGE H. CLARKE, OF SAME PLACE.
GRATE- BAR.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 59,3 l l, dated October' 30, 1866.
vation, and Fig. 3 an end view.
Similarletters of reference indicate likeparts in all the drawings.
In most of the' grate-hars heretofore made 4 and used no practical arrangement has been -lnade by which a bar located in the center or at a distance from the side could be unlocked andfremoved without commencing at the side and removing all the bars until thedefective one was reached, so that it could be removed readily.
Our invention is designed to obviatc this difficulty. and also to better provide for expansion of the hars when heated; also, in soarranging the hars that the lires may be readily removed when desired, as will be fully set forth hereinafter.
A represents the middle har of three, to which the bars B and C are secured by supports c a, as shown. The bar A is cast with an arched base to strengthen and support the bar. 0n the bars B and C are cast vertical dovetails c c, by which each set ot' bars is interlocked and retained together in proper position.
The supports a ay at the ends of the bars are cut at b, to admit of expansion. These cuts b b are cast in the bars by inserting in the mold a strip of metal, which is readily removed after the bar is cast.
To rake or draw the fire quickly when desired we cut away a portion of the supports a e,'as shown at d, so that the upper surface of these supports shall he somewhat below the planes of thesurface of the bars A B C, so that the rake-teeth shall not be obstructed in drawing the fire from the bars.
In the manufacture ot' grate-bars We eiect a great saving of time by casting three bars together, and providing for their unequal expansion in use and the ready removal of `any bar from the furnace, and the substitution of another in its place, Without regard to the position of said bar in the set. One or more of the supports a a may be cut as shown, to provide for expansion of the bars.
Having thus fully described our invention, whatwe claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In combination with the arched har A, the bars B and O, provided with vertical dovetails or similar interlockments, the slitted ends dividing the hars to admit of longitudinal expansion, and the grooves or depres sions inthe supports a a, the whole constructed substantially as described, and for the purposes specified.
GEORGE H. CLARKE. CHARLES VAN WAGENEN. Witnesses C. A. DURGIN, EDWARD E. OsBoRN.
