TO ALL WHOM IT /MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, DANIEL BORDNER, of Canton, in the county of Stark, State of Chio, have invented new and usefulimprovements in apparatus for operating Gates; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full,
clear, and exact description of myinvention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a partl of this specification, and to the letters of reference markedthereon, of which drawings- Figure l is an elevation of my operating gate applied to a railroad crossing. Figure 2 is a plan of the same.
The nature of my invention consists in the arrangement of a gate of the kind known as vertical opening gates, ivitha horizontal bar, which is connected to one end of the upper bar of the gate by a rope or chain, the said horizontal bar being pushed or slid along in its bearings bya horizontal lever, which is inserted in a vertical shaft, and the said vertical shaft being operated by a second horizontal lever attached to it, which lever, by being pushed by the locomotive, or person in the carriage desiring to pass the gate, causes the gate to open, and after they have passed the gate closes itsel` by reason of its own weight.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation. i i v Q is the main sill ofthe gate frame. G and T are the gate posts. To the post G are bolted the plates II H, to which the upper bar A of the gate is pivoted by the bolt a. The pieces D D are framed into t-he bar A, and the pieces B B are attached by the bolt E, as shown, the other bars c'c c of the gate leing pivoted to the vpieces B B-by bolts F F. To the end of the bar A is attached the cord I by means of the iron W, the cord I passing through the hole b in the gate post G, and being fastened to the sliding bar N. l By pushing these levers K K into the position K K, the gate is caused to rise, as shown by dotted lines in iig,
1, by which it is readily seen how the gate is opened. On releasing the levers K K, the weight of the gate causes it to close itself, and brings the several parts of the apparatus to their original position. The slantingbars R R serve to keep the gate from swinging, and bythe slot d in them and bolt e in the gate, serve to guide the gate in its vertical motion. I v
I do not claim as my invention the gate composed of bars A, c c c, B B, with bolts, as shown, nor the posts G and T, nor the plates H H, nor slanting'bars R R; but what Ido claim asA my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The vpeculiar arrangement of the levers K and L in shaft S, and acting on the bar N through the irons M, thc said bar N having the cord I attached to it and to the end W of the upper bar A of the gate, the several parts operating in the manner and for the purpose specified.
