To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HOWARD L. CoA'rs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hammond, in the county of St. Lawrence, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gates; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a gate.
An object of the invention resides in the provision of a self opening and closing gate.
A futher object of the invention resides in so constructing the device that the opening and closing will be under the direct control of the operator.
Vith these and other objects in View, such as will appear as my description progresses, my invention comprises the combination and arrangement of parts as set forth in and falling within the scope of the appended claim.
In the drawing: Figure 1 is an elevational view showing the gate in its closed position; Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the gate in its open position; Fig. 3 is a plan view of a portion of the gate; Fig. 4: is a detail showing the position of the pivoted end of the gate immediately preceding its opening movement; Fig. 5 is a similar view showing the position of the gate immedi ately preceding the closing movement; Fig. (3 is a detail of the lock; Fig. 7 is an enlarged detail of the upper pivot of the gate, and Fig. 8 is a fragmental plan view of the roller bearing.
The embodiment of my invention illustrated in the drawing includes a pair of spaced posts 1 and 2. A gate 3 extends between these posts and is pivoted at its lower end on a stud 4 and at its other end on a link 5, which link is pivoted, at 6, on the upper end of the post 1 so that the gate may not only have pivotal movement but the upper portion thereof may be moved out of the normal vertical plane of the gate as illustrated in Figs. 4.- and 5. On the end bar 7 of the gate a roller 8, which extends vertically, is mounted, which roller rides upon an arcuate track 9 which is supported adjacent to the upper end of the post 1 and extends horizontally and transversely to the post. double latch member 10 having notches 11 therein and a stop 12 is mounted on the post 2 and is adapted to be engaged by a spring pressed rod 13 which is mounted on the gate and is adapted to engage in the notches 11. In order that this rod may be disengaged from the notches and the gate swung so that the upper portion thereof will be out of the normal vertical plane of the gate, I have provided a pair of standards 14: which are mounted on the opposite sides of the gate and on which levers 15 are pivoted. A flexible operating member, such as a cable or a rope, 16 is secured to the upper end of each of the levers and extends through pulleys 17 on the gate and is connected to the rod 18. A similar operating member 18 is secured to the lower end of each of the levers and passes through a pulley 19 and is connected at its lower end to a tread member 20 which extends parallel to the gate across the road way and is pivoted, at 21, so that the end adjacent to the standard may be raised or lowered. Secured to the gate and extending in an opposite direction thereto is an arm 22 on the end of which a weight 23 is mounted for a purpose which will appear in the description of the operation. Secured to the lower ends of the levers 15 are operating members 21 which extend through pulleys 25 on the standards 14 so that the levers may be actuated manually.
In operation when a vehicle passes over one tread member 20 or when the operating member 2 1 is pulled the lever 15 will be actuated to withdraw the rod 13 from the notch 11 in which it is engaged. Then the rod reaches the limit of its inward movement the upper portion of the gate will be drawn toward the tread member so that the gate will assume an inclined position, the roller 8 riding upon the arcuate track 9. The pivot of the gate being inclined with relation to the vertical, the gate will swing to an open position toward the actuated tread member. This swinging movement is permitted because, as heretofore stated, the gate inclines upwardly away from the post 1. Now as the vehicle has passed between the posts 1 and 2 the opposite lever 15 will be actuated either by the tread member or by the operating member 24:. This will cause the upper portion of the gate to swing to the opposite side of the vertical with the roller 17 riding on the track 9 and consequently the gate Will swing into its initial or normally closed position. It will thus be seen that the gate Will open and close automatically but that its opening and closing Will be under the direct control of the operator so that it may be controlled either manually or by the Wheel of the vehicle. 7
While I have illustrated and described a particular embodiment of my invention, it has merely been for the sake of convenience and I do not wish to be limited to that particular embodiment as it is obvious that numerous changes may be made in the details of construction Without departing from thespirit of the invention or exceeding the scope of the appended claim;
