INVENTOR ATTORNEYS H /fix 1 Y WITNESSES M GATE-OPENING MEANS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY SOMERS, a subject of the King of Great Britain, and a res1- dent of Armstrong, Province of British Columbia, Dominion of Canada, have invented a new and Improved Gate-Opening Means, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates particularly to the operating means for road gates designed to be operated by a driver or equestrian to open the gate, and then for closing the same after having passed through the gate.
It is a design of the invention to improve in various particulars devices of the character indicated, to the end that efliciency in operation may be promoted, as well as economy of manufacture and simplicity of adjustment and control.
The invention will be particularly explained in the specific description following.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a gateoperating means embodying my invention; Fig. 2 is a plan view; Fig. 3 is a detail sectional side elevation showing the latch; and Fig. 4 is. a detail plan view of the hinge joint in the operating levers.
The invention is applicable to any swlnging road gate 10 having a hinge post 11 and latch post 12. To any suitable latch 13 are connected two latch cords 14:, one at each side of the gate, each of said cords being carried to and connected with one arm of separate bell crank levers 15, the opposite arms of said levers being connected respectively with pull ropes or other flexible elements 18, which are extended along the roadway above the gate, and at each side thereof, and connected with operating levers 19 fulcrumed as at 20 between the ends on road posts 21. The pull ropes 18 extend from the respective levers 19 over sheaves 17, the pivot pins 22 of which constitute also the fulcrums of the bell crank levers 15, and pass vertically through horizontal cross arms 16 suitably secured to the top of the gate 10. Thus the levers and sheaves 17 have common axes. The cross arms 16 comprise upper and lower plates between which the levers 15 and sheaves 17 are received. The one rope 18 extends from Specification of Letters Patent.

its lever 19 over the adjacent sheave 17 and across the top of the gate to a connection with the bell crank lever 15 at the opposite side, so that the two ropes overlap or cross, the rope at one side of the gate being connected with the bell crank lever on the opposite side. thus actuate the latch string at the opposite slde of the gate to release the latch and permit the gate to swing.
A continuous rope or other flexible element 23 connects the two levers 19 at the ends opposite the connection with the pull ropes 18. The levers are provided with handles 24: hinged as at 25 to the bodies of the levers. The hinge of each lever handle A pull on one rope 18. will is provided with a spring 26, which nor-- mally tends to maintain the handle disposed vertically and thus normally the handle will not overhang the roadway to afford an obstruction, but may be pulled downward by the operator to a posit-ion shown at the left of Fig. 1, for throwing the lever. A pull on either lever, it will be seen, will slacken the rope 18 connected with said lever and will exert a pull on the rope 23 connecting the levers, so that the opposite lever will exert a pull on its rope 14 and release the latch. The continued movements of the levers will swing the gate toward the said opposite lever and away from the operator. Additional latch posts 27 are arranged along the road at a distance to engage the latch when the gate is swung in either direction, said posts being provided with any suitable catch 28, according to the character of the gate latch 13. In the present instance the gate latch has an axially sliding spindle 29 extending through the adjacent vertical member of the gate 10, and is connected with the resilient plate 30 secured to the gate, the arrangement being such that a pull on the latch will withdraw the resilient plate 30 from the catch 31 on the latch post 12. The rope 23 connecting the two levers runs over a pulley 32 on the hinge posts 11 and forms a direct, straight connection between the two levers.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The combination with a swinging gate and its latch, of latch-tripping and gateoperating means comprising a pair of horizontal bell crank levers mounted on the gate, one lever at each side, a sheave adjacent to each lever, one sheave being beneath the lever adjacent thereto and one above its adjacent lever, pins constituting the fulcrum of the levers, the sheaves being held by and turning on said pins, latch strings connected at one end with the gate latch, each latch string at the opposite end being connected with one arm of one of said levers, flexible elements connected at one end with the 0pi posite arms of said levers, gate operating levers mounted at opposite sides of the gate, a distance therefrom, an element connecting the gate-operating levers, said levers being connected also with the ends of the flexible elements opposite the latch levers, that flexible element connected with the latch lever at one side of the gate crossing over the gate to the opposite side and being connected with the gate operating lever of said opposite side.
2. The combination with a swinging gate, and its latch, of latch-tripping and gateoperating means comprising a pair of latchoperating levers of the first order mounted on the gate, one at each side thereof, latch strings at each side of the gate, each connected with one end of the gate latch, and connected with one arm of that latch lever at the adjacent side of the gate, flexible elements connected at one end with the opposite arms of said levers, gate operating levers mounted at opposite sides of the gate, a distance therefrom, an element connecting the gate-operating levers, said levers being connected also with the ends of the flexible elements opposite the latch levers, that flexible element connected with the latch lever at one side of the gate crossing over the gate to the opposite side and being connected with the gate-operating lever on said opposite side.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
HARRY SOMERS.
