Be it knownl that I, ELLIOT LEWIS, of Lockport, in the county of Niagara, and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Sad-Irons; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had tothe accompanying drawings, making part ofthis specification, in which i Figure l is a longitudinal section of a sad-iron representing my improvement.

My improvement relates to that class of smoothing-irons where the handles are made detachable, so that only one handle is required for each operator, although several irons may be employed. The invention consists ofthe peculiar construction of the handle provided with a locking bolt, which may or -may not bevpartially actuated by a spring, when arranged with the sad-iron, so constructed as to enable the handle to be readily attached and securely fastened to the iron or disconnected therefrom, when required, as hereafter set forth.

In the drawings, A represents the smoothingdron cast with a'shnllow channel or groove, b, forming a way for the lower ends of the handle in attaching the latter thereto, and with Wires or bridges, c c, extending acrossthis channel and a narrow mortise or socket-` d, formed transversely in the bottom of the Way a little to the rear of the front bridge,as clearly shown in figs. 1 and The handle E may be made, as represented, with its legs ff provided with feet, g, flat and horizontal, so as to fit and slide in the way b and engage under Ithe bridges or across wires, c, which are placed at a proper'distance apart, as shown in fig. l. The front leg of the handle has attached to it byva sleeve, asishown, or in any other suitable manner, a catch-bolt, L, (preferably arranged on the inner side so as to be conveniently operated by the fore-fingen) which fits in 'the socket cl, and thereby firmly secures the handle in place when it is properly connected with the iron, as represented in fig. l. The upper end of the bolt is provided witha suitable"fingerpiece, z', for operating it, and which is preferably pressed upon by a spring, j, secured to the leg in any convenient manner to insure vthe descent of the bolt into its socket- This spring Vis not, however-, absolutely essential,- as the gravity of" the bolt'when properly constructed would cause it to drop into the mortise, or the finger might be employed to force it in, if necessary. The effect of the spring is not only to drive the bolt downward, but also serves to keep it firmly pressed down in the mortise, which thereby secures the handle more firmly in place. The iron Amay also be formed with a wire loop or handle, It, by which it may be carried and hung up when not required for use. The handle E is readily attached to the iron by sliding the feetg into the way b from the rear until they pass under and engage with the cross-wires c, when the bolt L drops in the socket d and securely fastens it in position.,

The advantages of a detachable handle are obvious. It enables the irons to be heated in a closed vessel, which can be accomplished with much less fuel and greater comfort, especial-ly in warm weather..v '.lhat portion of the handle which comes in contact with the hand may he of wood, which is comparatively a non-conductor of heat and renders the ordinary holder for protecting the hand unnecessary, and the handle by being comparatively cold saves the inconvenience and vexat-ion which attend the use of sad-irons with permanently attached handles, which are always hot.- Hy improvement is simple and cheap of construction. It dispenses with the use of but one 'handle for a set of irons, and can be readily and firmly attached to the irons, and detached with equal facility, when required. i

What I claim as my invention, is-
