Description

IMPROVEMENT IN VALVES FOR STEAMy ENGINES.
fatte dgehule refemr tu in tlgsse rttets ntcnt fmt mntinglpntt nt tige sume.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CON CERN:
Be it known that I, CHARLES E. CASE, of Xenia, in the county of Greene, in the State of Ohio, have invented a new Valve, to be used in Steamv Engines or other Machines; and I do further declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction of the valve whereby to cause it to rotate, and
. thus perform a grinding eileot on the valve and its seat, and thus cause them to remain tight. This motion is imparted tothe valve by means of the liquid or steam acting'upon and turning or rotating the valve, by means of the spiral or twisted pin which is situated on the under side of the valve and attached to it. l
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will describe its construction and oper'- ation. I construct my valve asirepresented in the accompanying drawings, in which the valve is represented in all its several parts.
A represents the upper section, which is of' cylindrical form, having the passage for the liquids or steam enlarged, so as to admit of the raising and falling of the valve as it opens and closes. Across the upper portion of this opening I arrange a pivot, F, on which, or against which, the valve may turn, but which allows the valve room enough to act with facility.
The lower part, represented at B, is the same as the upper, with the exception that the valve-seat, which ris as represented at G, thisI being cut so that the valve may sit upon it in such a manner as to prevent the return of the liquid orsteam which has passed through it.
The valve proper is of a/hemispherioal form, as represented at C, having a spiral pin, II, attached to the l under side, and neatly fitting the Aopening in the lower section-B, through which the liquid or steam cannot pass' without raising the valve and givingv it a rotating motion.
E represents the top of the valve- The liquid or, steam is allowed to pass through the openings L h z. which are made large enough for easy egress, leaving wings, by which the valve is guided in its motions.
D represents the valve complete in all its'parts. Having thus described my invention, what I claimas new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- The valve Gv'and spiral pin I-I, constructed and arranged substantially upon the principle and in the manner herein set forth.
CHARLES E. CASE.
