Description
ADAM GOOD, JR., AND SIMON STROUSE, OF TITUSVILLE, PENNSYLVANIA.
LettersmPatent No. 80,474, dated July 28, 1868.
IMPROVEMENT VIN VALVES.
@te Srlgthule referat tu in ,tigen stters ntent :mt uniting um nf tige anus.'
TO AALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN: l
Be it known that we, ADAALGOOD, Jr., and SIMON STROUSE, of Titusville, in the county of Crawford, and State o'f Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Valves; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, andexact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification, .in which- Figure 1 represents a view in section of our improved union-coupling and valve.
Figure 2, a view of the valve thereof, as seen from the bottom end.
Figure 3, a plan or top view of the valve-seat.
The nature of our invention consists in combining a valve for the passage of steam, wateror other fluids with a union-coupling, for connecting the receiving and delivery pipes through which the same is conducted, in such manner that risk of leakage through the valve is' obviated, and enabling the latter to be readily removed when desired, for the purpose of renewal or repair.
In the accompanying drawings, which show'a convenient arrangement of parts for carrying out the objects of our invention, the union-coupling is represented as composed of two chambers, A A, t;r'the outer endsof which the receiving and delivery-pipes are screwed, and which are united bythe coupling-nut B. i
yA circular valve-seat, C, is inserted in the top of the chamber A, having a suitable ground-joint at'its junction therewith, and is held in position by the chamber A, when the chambers A A are screwed together by the coupling-nut B, the valve-seat resting against a shoulder in the chamber A. Openings c are made in lthe valve-seat for the passage of the Huid. vA. circular valve, D, moves longitudinally upon a stem or guide,
E, which is screwed into the seat C, and has a guard, e, upon its top, to prevent the valve from lifting too far from thefs'eat.
Vlhevalve-seat and stem areconcentric with -tlie chambers ADA. The valve D and seat C 'are faced accurately upon their meeting-surfaces, or, if deemed necessary, rubber or other packing may be interposed between them.A When the valve is in contact with the scat, 'the openings c are closed, and no fluid can pass from A to A'. A
It will be 'seen that wear of thevalve upon the stem will not have any tendeneyt produce leakage;
It is readily adaptable to use as a pump or check-valve, or any other purpose to which a-valve is applicable, obviating the use of a special cage, and can easily be taken out for renewal or repair when desired.
In order to produce au intermitting motion of the valve, we .provide its base with recesses, iz', inclining or sloping in one direction.
What we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is p The valve D, provided with inclined or sloping recesses z', in combination with stem E, seat C, and c haml bers A A', all arranged to operate substantially as described.'
In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our own, we aix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
' ADAM GOOD, Jn., VSIMON STROUSE.
