FOLDING BEDSTEAD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 640,021, dated December 26, 1899.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES WELsH PEPPER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Folding Bedstead, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in folding bedsteads; and it consists in providing head and foot members each adapted to maintain the upright position independently of the cooperation of the other and abed-bottom adapted when the bedstead is folded to occupy approximately a vertical position without the bending or folding upon itself of the same. The head and foot members are each provided with broad bases or supplemental feet adapted to support said member in the upright position independently of any sustaining cooperation on the part of the other parts of the device, the projecting base or supplemental legs of one member being adapted to pass the projecting base or supplemental legs of the other member, so that said head and foot members may be brought into close proximity when the bed-bottom occu-' pies the vertical position between the 'two. The bed-bottom is pivotally secured to the head member, so that it may be rotated on said pivots from the vertical to the horizontal position, and vice versa. The bed-bottom is also linked to the foot member, so that the latter will be moved inward or toward the head member as the bed-bottom assumes the vertical position and will be moved outward or away from the head member to receive the bed-bottom as the same assumes the horizontal position. Spring means are also connected between the head member andthe bedbottom to assist in the operation of closing the bedstead and also to maintain the bedbottom in the vertical position.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a View in perspective of my bedstead in the open position. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of same on a slightly-larger scale than the other figures. Fig. 3 is a view in perspective of same partially closed. Fig. 4; is a perspective view of same closed.
Similar letters of reference indicate similar parts in the several views.
The head member a and the foot member b are each provided with supplemental feet 0 and d, which are adapted to maintain said members in the vertical position independently of each other. These supplemental feet 0 and cl are provided with tapered lugs e at their upper extremities adapted to fit in similarly-shaped apertures provided in the head and foot members, respectively, and are rigidly held therein by the nuts f, threaded on the ends of said lugs e. These supplemental feet when in the operative position are further braced by the cross-rod Z, which is removably bolted thereto." When, however, it is desired to take the bedstead apart after the bed-bottom and cross-rod brace have been detached therefrom by loosening the nuts f, the legs 0 and d may be rotated or folded upon the head and foot members, respectively, for convenient transportation. To the supplemental foot members 0 of the head member a is pivoted at g the mattress-frame h, which for the sake of brevity I shall hereinafter designate as bedbottomjso that the latter may readily rotate upon the pivots from the vertical to the horizontal position, and vice versa.
Pivotally secured at z' to the bed-bottom h and atj to the foot member 17 are the links or levers k, which are adapted to maintainfoot member bin the required position with re spect to the bed-bottom h"'tl1at is to say, when the bed-bottom his in the horizontal position the foot member 2) will be maintained in such position that it will support the foot or free end of said bed-bottom, and when the bedbottom is lifted into the vertical position it will draw after it the foot member 2) until the same has assumed a position shown in Fig. 4.
The spiral springs m, which are suitably secured to the head member, are adapted to bear against the bed-bottom and assist in the operation of closing the bed and also to maintain the bed-bottom in the vertical position until force is applied to move it therefrom. The framework n, projecting from the upper part of the head member, is adapted to sup* port the curtains 0, which may be drawn together and close or cover the device when in the folded position.
What I claim is- 1. In a folding bedstead the combination of head and foot members, supplemental feet removably secured thereto, a bed-bottom rota- ,tably secured to the supplemental feet of one member and pivotally linked to the supplemental feet of the other member.
2. In a folding bedstead the combination of head and foot members, supplemental feet, a lug and recess connection whereby the supplemental feet are detachably secured to the head and foot members, a bed-bottom rotatably secured to the supplemental feet of one member and pivotally linked to the supplemental feet of the other member, substantially as described.
3. In a folding bedstead the combination of head and foot members provided with apertures, supplemental feet with lugs adapted to fit in said apertures, and a bed-bottom rotatably secured to the supplemental feet of one member and pivotally linked tothe supplemental feet of the other member.
4. In a folding bedstead the combination of head and foot members provided with tapered apertures, supplemental feet with tapered lugs adapted to fit in said apertures, and a bed-bottom rot-atably secured to the supplemental feet of one member and pivotally linked to the supplemental feet of the other member.
5. In a folding bedstead the combination of head and foot members provided with tapered apertures, supplemental feet with tapered lugs adapted to fit in said apertures, said tapered lugs having threaded ends and coacting nuts thereon, to secure the same in the said apertures, and a bed-bottom rotatably secured to the supplemental feet of one member and pivotally linked to the supplemental feet of the other member.
6. In a folding bedstead the combination of head and foot members, supplemental feet removably secured thereto, with horizontal cross-bars detachably connecting the supplemental feet of each member, as a brace therefor, and a bed-bottom rotatably secured to the supplemental feet of one memberandpivotally linked to the supplemental feet of the other member.
