To all whom it may concern lie it known that I, Benn/mm l). Encnmouu, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Couches or Divans, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to divans or couches, the object of the improvement be ing to provide an improved divan or conch which may be readily converted into a double bed, and which divan or couch is provided with a swinging seat member or section having arms at its ends which when the structure is converted into a double bed will form the means for supporting such seat member, and in which said arms and a portion of the legs of the other section may be readily folded so that the structure may be stored away in a small space or shipped in a more compact manner than is usually possible with structures of this kind, one of the objects being to provide a structure of the class specified which can be made up at a very low cost and yet is durable and also simple to handle.

In the drawings accompanying and forming part of this specification Figure 1 is an end view of the present improvement in the form of a divan; Fig. 2 is an end view thereof partly opened to form a double bed; F 3 is a side View with the end arms and a portion of the legs folded; Fig. at is a detail view partly broken away of one of the folded legs; and Fig. 5 is a partly sectional View of a portion of one of the arms folded.

Similar characters of reference illustrate corresponding parts throughout the figures of the drawings.

In the preferred form of the present improvement it comprises a main or support ing section 2 comprising a pair of end frames 3, each consisting of a cross'bar 4 and a pair of legs 5 connected by suitable members 6. Stretched between the crossbars is a suitable spring or fabric 7. Each leg comprises a fixed portion 8 and a folding portion 9 carrying a caster at its lower end. In the form shown the fixed and foldable portions or members of the log are preferably made of angle-iron, the end of the fixed portion 10 overlapping the upper end of the foldable portion. her is provided with an elongated slot 12 at one side thereof and with a notch or recess 13 opening at its end on the other side thereof, while the foldable member is provided with a pair of pins or fastening devices, one 14L projecting into the slot and the other 15 engaging the notch, both of these pins being headed. The pin projecting into the elongated slot acts as a pivot for the folding of the folding portion of the leg, while the pin projecting into the notch acts as the means for holding it in its perpendicular position. lVhcn the folding portion of the leg is pulled downward to separate the pin from the notch it can then be swung into its folded position shown in Fig. 3 by reason of the pin and the elongated slot, hereinbefore referred to. The folding legs at; each end are connected by a brace or cross member 16 so that on manipulating one of them the other will be operated also.

At each end of the swinging section is an up right arm 21, the ends of the arm being pivotally connected to lugs .22, which lugs carry a pair of beaded. devices or pins Q -hand 2- the pins 94L being adapted to engage notches 95, one carried by each end of the arm, while the pins 23 form a pivotal connection for the arm, each pin 23 projecting into an elongated slot 26 in the end of the arm, whereby on freeing the notches from their pins, which is permitted by the elongated slots carried by the arm, each arm can be swung downward on top of the fabric in the manner shown in Figs. 3 and I t will be observed that the headed pins of the leg portions, as well as of the foldablc arm portions, are diagonally located relatively to each other.

The arms of the swinging section are of sullicient height so that when the swinging section is swung into position to form a double bed these arms will rest upon the floor and form supports for the swinging section.

In operation when the swinging section is on top of the main section the structure will be in the form of a divan and the two fabrics will form the seat thereof. When,

however, the swinging section is thrown over in the position partly shown in Fig. 2 the structure is converted into a double bed. By manipulating the arms and legs in the manner hereinbefore described these arms and legs may be folded into the position shown in Fig. 3 so that the structure is in a very compact form either for shipment or storage. t

It will be observed that the arms of the swinging section and the legs of the stationary section may be folded inwardly in the direction of the length of the bed, so that the structure will be a very compact one. It will also be observed that when the arms and legs are in their perpendicular position the pins and notches, hereinbefore referred to, lock them in such position, and that the release of the arms and legs to permit them to fold is obtained merely by pulling these members in the direction of their length so as to separate the notches from the pins, this being permitted by means of the slot and pin connection, hereinbefore referred to. Thus an efficient and simple means of hinging the arms and legs and of locking the same in their perpendicular position is obtained by the use of merely a pair of pins and a slot and notch, thus avoiding the necessity of using levers or angle pieces and other members liable to quickly get out of order.

I claim as my invention 1. A couch or divan comprising a main section and a swinging section hinged thereto and adapted to rest flatwise over the main section to form a divan and to be swung to one side thereof and reversed to form a bed, said main section having leg portions foldable inwardly in the direction of the length of the bed, and said swinging to, and adapted to rest flatwise over the main section to form a divan, and to be swung to one side thereof and reversed to form a double bed, said main section having legs eachmade up of a rigid portion and a foldable-portion pivotally connected to the rigid portion to fold inwardly in the direction of the length of the bed, means for maintaining the folded portion in a perpendicular position, and comprising a pin and a notch, the latter carried by said rigid portion, said swinging section having upright end arms pivotally connected thereto and likewise foldable inwardly in the direction of the length of the bed, and means for maintaiir mg said arms in an upright position and also comprising a pin and a notch, the latter carried by the arms, the pivotal connection of the legs and arms being such that movement in the direction of the length thereof is permitted to effect the release of the notches from their pins.
