UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HELEN ASHLAND KEAN, OF WEST HAVEN, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO VICTORIA PURDY LESTER, OE SAME PLACE.
D'E'VICE FOR WAXING SAD-IRONS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 639,924, dated December 26, 1899.
Application filed December Z. 1898. Serial No. 698,107. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern,.-
Beit known that I, HELEN ASHLAND KEAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of West Haven, county of New Haven, and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful AImprovements in Devices for Waxing Sad-Irons, of which the following is a speciiication, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to a device for waxing sad-irons and the object thereof is to provide a stand for the iron, to which is permanently attacheda block of wax which is adapted to feed itself to the iron automatically.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of the various parts and will be hereinafter fully described, and specifically set forth in the annexed claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure lis a plan view of the device in open position. Fig. 2 is a central sectional view, and Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the device in closed position.
In constructing my invention I employ a stand l,having a centraldepressed portion 2 and a series of legso. This stand is preferably constructed of cast metal of any approved design. A disk 5 of suitable material and of a diameter slightly less than the interiorof the depressed portion of the plate is adapted to be normally forced upwardly by the springs 6 6, xed to said plate and in contact with the'under side of said disk. A block of wax 7 is adapted to rest upon the upper surface of disk 5 and fit snugly the interior of the depressed portion of the plate 1. A secondary plate 8, provided with legs 9 9, formed integrally therewith and of any approved design, is preferably constructed of cast metal. A link 10 engages suitable apertures l1 and 12 near the periphery of the plates 1 and 8, respectively, and serves to permanently connect said plates. The plate 8 is used simply as a rest for the sad-iron. At a point diametrically opposite to the aperture 12 is another aperture 13, in which the hook 15 is clenched. Diametrically opposite to the aperture ll is a similar aperture 16, adapted for engagement with the point of the hook 15 when the device is closed, as shown in Fig. 3.
A pad 17, one side of which is covered with fiannel and the other with sandpaper or emerycloth to be utilized foi` cleaning the face of the sad-iron, may be used in connection withv the device and folded between the parts thereof when it is in closed position, as shown in Fig. 3.
In the operation of the device the two plates are opened and the heated iron passed over the wax in plate l, the heat of the iron melt ing the upper surface of the block of wax, a portion of which adheres to the iron. The plate 8 is used simply as a rest for the iron. As the wax is used the springs 6 6 force the block upwardly, so that its upper face is al-v ways flush with or slightly above the upper surface of the plate l. This action will continue until the wax is entirely used up and another block may be inserted in its place.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A device for Waxing sad-irons embodyingvthe plate having the depressed portion centrally located therein, the spring-actuated disk in said depressed portion, said disk adapted to carry upon its face a block of wax, and a secondary plate linked to the main plate, substantially as described.
2. A device for waxing sad-irons embodying a plate having a depressed portion, a
Vspring-actuated disk within said Vdepressed portion adapted to carry a block of wax, a secondary plate, a link connecting said plates, and a hook fixed to one of said plates adapted for engagement with a suitable aperture in the other, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence ofvtwo witnesses, this 29th day of November, 1898.
HELEN ASHLAND KEAN.
