G. Mel. GRANT. CUTTING TOUL,
tApplication filed June 8 ,L 1899.) (No Model.)
Ilr'rn STATES GEGRGE MCINTYRE GRANT, OF
Pntrniwry rrrcn.
VALLEY SPRINGS, CALIFORNIA.
CUTTING-TOOL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 639,377, dated December 19, 1899.
Application filed T R116 8 1899' To all whom t may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE MCINTYRE GRANT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Valley Springs, in the county of Calaveras and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cutting-Tools; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to cutters of the type comprising pivoted arms carrying bits at ltheir free ends, levers for forcefully bringing the arms together, and guide mechanism for causing the levers to operate alike.
The purpose of the invention is to improve the general construction, dispose the parts to the best^ possibleadvantage with reference to durability and efficiency, and to provide a tool which can be used for trimming horses hoofs, dehorning cattle, cutting rods and bolts, and for a variety of purposes requiring a tool of the character aforesaid, easy of operation and satisfactory in result.
For afull understanding of the merits, advantages, and details of construction of the invention, reference is to be had to the following description and the drawings hereto attached.
While the drawings show the preferred embodiment of the invention, it is to be understood that various changes in the form, proportions, and minor details of construction Vmay be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any ofthe advantages thereof.
In the drawings, Figure l is a side elevation of a cutting-tool constructed in accordance with and embodying the essential features of the invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical central section on the lineXX of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail view in elevation, the obverse plate of the frame or head being removed and the outer ends of the levers broken away.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings bythe saine reference characters.
The head or frame is composed of side plates 1, having centrally-disposed vertical Serial No. 719,808. (No model.)
slots 2 and oppositely-located curved slots 3. These plates are comparatively thin .and are reinforced at their upper and lower ends by bars a and 5, which are secured thereto in any substantial manner. The upper bars 4 are depressed centrally and constitute yokes, and are thickened at their ends to provide extended bearings for the pins 6, npoin which the levers 7 are mounted and which likewise connect the bars and plates. The side plates l are disposed in parallel relation and are spaced apart a distance to receive the upper or outer ends of the levers 7, and diminish in width toward their lower ends. The vertical slots 2 are in coincident relation and receive the end portions of the pin 8, which pivot-ally connects the togglelinks 9, by means of which the levers 7 are connected for simultaneous action.
The arms l0 have their lower ends deliected and overlapped, the overlapping portions being halved and pivotally connected by means of the pin 11, which likewise connects the side plates'and bars 5. These arms 10 are arranged between the plates l and are provided at their upper ends with bits or cutters 12, which may be of any formation, according to the purpose for which the tool is specially constructed. The arms are normally forced apart at their free ends by means of a spring 13, which may be of any approved formation. and which, as shown, consists of a length of wire doubled upon itself and formed centrally with a coil or eye to receive the pin le, upon Which the spring is mounted, the end portions of the wire diverging and exerting an outward pressure against the inner edges of the arms. The pin 14, besides forming asupport for the spring 13, connects the side plates l and the barst.
The levers 7 have their pivotal ends formed with outer extensions 15, which are apertured to receive the pins 6, the corners or elbows being recessed and having wear-blocks or rollers 16 applied thereto, so as to receive the wear incident to the sliding contact of the levers with the outer edges of the arms 10 when the tool is in operation. These wear-blocks or rollers 16 are of hardened steel, and may be applied to the levers in any manner found most advantageous and economical.
ICO
The toggle-links 9 are provided in pairs and are disposed exterior to the head or frame and are connected at their upper outer ends with the levers 7 by means of pins 17, the end portions of which are adapted to enter the curved slots 3, formed in the edges of the plates l near their upper ends. The inner ends of the toggle-links are connected by the pin S, which is adapted to travel in the vertical slots 2 of the plates l. A slight space exists between the opposing sides of the links 9 and levers 7 to receive the portions of the plates l bordering upon the curved slots 3.
When the levers 7 are separated at their lower or free ends, the arms l() are forced apart at their free ends by means of the spring 13, thereby admitting of the part to be cut being received between the bits or cutters l2. Upon moving the free ends of the levers together the elbow portions acting as cams and riding upon the outer edges of the said arms press the latter together and canse the bits or cutters to advance and sever the article received between them. The movement ofthe levers is uniform and the head or Aframe is maintained centrally between them by reason of the toggle-links 9 and their connection with the said frame by means of the pin 8, operating in the slots 2.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is- The herein-described cutting-tool, comprising side plates having centrally-disposed vertical' slots and opposite curved slots in their upper edges, bars reinforcing the upper and lower ends of said plates, arms located between theplates and pivoted thereto and to each other at their lower ends and provided with bits at their upper ends, a spring mounted upon a pin connecting the upper bars and eX- erting an outward pressure upon the said arms and normally holding them separated, levers provided with outer extensions placed between the upper corners of the plates and pivoted thereto and to the outer ends of the upper reinforcing-bars and provided at their elbows with wear devices, toggle-links embracing the side plates and pivoted to the levers adjacent to their elbows, and a pin connecting the inner ends of the levers and passing through the vertical slots of the side plates, substantially as and for the purpose specified. In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
