Description

nitrh JOSEPH EVES HOVER, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENSYLVANIA.
Letters Patent 1V0. 63,896, dated April 16, 1867.
IMPROVED PRINTIHG PAPER.
To ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, JQSEPH EVES HOVER, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented an Improvement in Printing Paper; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of'the'manner in which the same is made. I
A size isfirst prepared in the following manner: Four ounces, or thereabouts', of starch are dissolved in about two hundred and forty ounces of water, and about twelve ounces of commercial carbonate of lime, triagnesia, or its equivalent, are added to the solution, a small portion-of glue being also added if desired. This size is then applied with a brush, or in any other suitable manner, to the surface of any of the papers usually employed for-printing, the paper being afterwards dried and calendered, when it will be ready for use.
I have found that printing paper coated with this size on the surface is much better adapted for the reception of printing ink than ordinary unprepared paper, that the thickness and strength of the paper are'increased, and that the surface isrendered much smoother; Thesizing will also neutralize any acid which may be either in the fibre or on the surface of the paper, and the latter will therefore be rendered more durable.
The sizing may be applied to the paper after it is finished or during the process of its manufacture. while other materials than those alluded to may be used for sizing the paper, the 'main object being to impart to the surface of the paper a permanent coating of carbonate of lime, or of magnesia, or their equivalents.
I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent v A printing paper, the surface of which is coated with carbonate of lime or its equivalent, for the purpose specified.
" In testimony whereof I have signed myname to this specification in thepresenceof two subscribing witnesses.
JQS. E.. HOVER.
