IMPROVED mnnmd-comrosrnon.
The Schedule referred to' in these Letters Patent and making part ot'tho same.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, N. A. THORNTON, of Oonikee,
in the county of Barbour, and State of Alabama,
have invented a new and improved Tanning-Composition; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same.
My invention has for its object to furnish an improved composition for tanning, by means of which the tanning may be done quicker and cheaper, making the leather stronger and more durable than can be done when the tanning is done in the ordinary man:
ner; and
It consists in the combination, with the ordinary tanning or leach-liquor, of the followingingredients,
in the following proportions:
In preparing this composition, I first make the leachvor tanning-liquor from bark, in the ordinary manner; then for every five hundred gallons of theleach-liquor, I add fiftypounds of catechu' and fifty pounds of common salt.
After the catechu and salt have been dissolved in the leach-liquor, I add to the mixture five pints of sulphuric acid to every five hundred gallons of the leach-liquor, and the composition is ready for use. 7 By the'use of this composition, leather may be tanned in ten days, more or less, according to the kind and quality of the skins, producing strong, flexible,
durable, thoroughly-tanned leather.
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- Ina tanning-liquor, the combination of catechu, common salt, and sulphuric acid, in the proportions and manner herein described.
