SPEQIFIOA'IION. TO ALL WHOM IT MAY GONCERN:
Be it known that I, ALEXANDER HILL, of Dubuque, in the county of i p and State of Iowa, have invented a new and improved Tanning Process; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and, exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to fully understand and m'a'ke use of the i same.
Myinvention consists in a new and improved process of tanning hide, as will be presently described. The hides and skins are first subjected to the action of a. liquid, of the following ingredients, and in about' the I proportions stated: Soot, say 1 1b.; sulphuric acid, 1 11).; water, 20 gallons. The hides are,kep' t in this solution about twelve hours, when they are taken out and worked lightly on the, beam; After this they are subjected i to the action of aliquid composed of the following ingredients, in about the proportions named: Bengal catechu,
10 lbs. sal ammonia, 1 lb; suflicient water being added to the above to enable the skins to be properly handled daily. This solution should be strengthened every other day by a sniall addition of catechu, and the hides should he kept in it about ten days, when they maybe removed. Bythis process skinsrnay be tanned in a. very superior manner, and in a very short time. Y
