Beit known that I, HENRY M. OHIL'DERS,a citizen of the United States, residing at Ontario, in the county of Malheur and State of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Needle-Threaders and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to 1o which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in needle-threaders for sewing-machines, the object of the same b'eing to provide a simple and cheaply-constructed device of this character by means of which the needle of the sewing-machine may be readily and conveniently threaded even by persons with poor eyesight.

The invention consists of a block having a zo cut-away portion on its under side permitting it to straddle the presser-foot of a sewing-machine, a cut-away portion on its upper side forming a shoulder at one end, a tapering cone-shaped slot extending laterally therez5 through having an extension at one side leading outwardly through said shoulder, and a recess to receive the point of the needle.

The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- 3o Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a sewingmachine, showing the application of my improved threading device thereto. Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view, on an enlarged scale, ot' the threader. Fig. 3 is a vertical 3 5 central longitudinal section through the same.

Fig. 4 is a top plan view, and Fig. 5 is a horizontal sectional view, through the tapering opening therein.

My improved threader is made p of a block l, of metal or other suitable material, having its under side cut away, as shown at 2, forming legs or supports 3 3, upon which said block is adapted to rest and permitting the same to straddle lthe presser-foot 4 of the sewing-machine 5. The upper side of the block lis cut away at one point, forming a shoulder 6 and a flug or extension 7 thereon. Extending through the lug 7 is a tapering cone-shaped 5o opening 8, which terminates at a point adjacent to the shoulder 6 and has a slit 9 leading thereinto through the lug or extension 7. A vertically-disposed recess l0, adapted to receive the lower end of the needle 1I', is formed 5 5 in the top surface of the block 1 adjacent to one side of the shoulder 6.

In using my device the block l is applied as shown in Fig. l of the drawings andthe needle 4 is lowered so that the point thereof iits with- 6o in the recess lO. The said needle is moved until the eye therein lies directly opposite the small end of the tapering opening 8. The thread is then free to be passed through said opening and through the eye of the needle, being guided in its course by the inclined sides of said tapering opening. When inserted in the eye of the needle, the thread may be withdrawn from the slot S through the slit 9, leading thereinto. The needle 4 is then 7o moved out of the recess 10 and the block lis removed.

The device is extremely simple in construction, can be cheaply made, and is eective for the purpose for which it was designed.

Having now described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

As a new article of manufacture, a needle-threader comprising a parallelogrammic 8o block having a cut-away portion upon its lower surface to straddle the presser-foot of a sewing-machine, a lug upon the upper surface of the block at one extremity thereof, a tapering opening extending through the lug terminating at a point above the depressed surface of the block, a slit extending from the opening through the lug, and a recess in the block for receiving the point of the needle opposite the contracted end of the tapering 9o opening, substantially as described.
