UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN BARLOWV, OF NOTTINGHAM, ENGLAND, ASSIGN OR OF ONE-FOURTH TO HENRY EDWARD I-IUBBART AND ARTHUR DUROSE, OF SAME PLACE.
NEEDLE-TH READER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 574,514, dated January 5, 1897. Application filed June 16, 1896. $erial No. 595,738. (No model.) Patented in England February 1, 1895, No. 2,256.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN BARLOW, a subject of the Queen of England, and a resident of Nottingham, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Needle- Threading Devices, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar letters of reference indi- 1o cate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to devices for threading needles; and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class which is simple in construction and operation, and
for which Letters Patent have been granted in Great Britain, No. 2,256, dated February 1, 1895.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompa- 2o nying drawings form a part, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved device for threading needles; Fig. 2, a front elevation thereof; Fig. 3, a plan view thereof; Fig. 4, an enlarged perspective view;
Fig. 5, a side elevation of the device as designed for use in threading sewing-machine needles; Fig. 6, a front elevation thereof; Fig.
7, a plan view, and Fig. 8 an enlarged perspective view thereof.
0 In the practice of my invention I provide an angular-shaped frame composed of two parts A and B, the horizontal part A being provided in its upper surface with a groove O, which is in line with a vertical groove D 3 5 in the vertical part B. The vertical part B of the frame is bent to form a circular or elliptical loop or head F, which formsa spring whereby the arm E, which is formed integrally with the part B, is pressed against the said part B of the frame and by which the needle N to be threaded is firmly held in the groove D.
The eye end of the needle is placed in proper position for threading by inserting a pin in said eye and pressing the needle downwardly until the pin lies in the thread-groove O,when
the pin is withdrawn and the thread or other material T, suitably pointed, is caused to slide along the groove O toward the eye N of the needle, as clearly shown in Figs. 4 and 8.
WVhen the device is used for threading needles for sewing-machines, it is adjusted, as
shown in Figs. 5 to 8, until the groove 0 is in line with the eye of the needle, when the thread T is pushed along the groove 0 and through the eye of the needle. I11 this case the frame, consisting of the parts A and B,
is slotted at the angle thereof fora portion of its width, so as to allow the needle to enter and be withdrawn from the instrument, and it is evident that changes in and modifications of the construction herein described may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages. 6 5
This device is well adapted to. accomplish the result for which it is intended and is also comparatively inexpensive.
Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desireto secure by Letters Patent- 1. A device for threading needles, comprising a frame, which is composed of a vertical and a horizontal part, the vertical part being provided with a groove in which the needle may be held, and the horizontal part with a similar groove formed at an angle thereto, and which communicates therewith, and serves as a guide for the thread, said vertical part being also provided with a spring clamping device for holding the needle in the groove, and formed by folding a part thereof over said groove, substantially as shown and described.
2. A device for threading needles, comprising a frame, which is composed of a vertical and a horizontal part, the vertical part being provided with a groove in which the needle may be held, and the horizontal part with a similar groove, which communicates therewith, and which serves as a guide for the thread, said vertical part being also provided withafolded spring clamping device for holding the needle in the groove, formed therein, and said frame being also provided at the an- 5 gle thereto, with a slot whereby the device is adapted to serve for threading machine-needles, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as .my invention I have signed my name, in pres IOO ence of the subscribing witnesses, this 4th day of June, 1896.
