UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN ELIJAH BOYNTON, OF DUBLIN, TEXAS.
WIRE-FENCE TOOL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 638,550, dated December 5, 1899.
Application filed June 21, 1899. Serial No. 721,344. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, JOHN ELIJAH BOYNTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dublin, in the county of Erath and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wire-Fence Tools; and I do declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention has relation to wire-fence tools.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple, durable, and inexpensive tool of this character which may be used for stretching fence-wires and taking up the sag therein.
With this object in view the invention consists in certain features of construction and combination of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a section of awire fence illustrating the application of my invention when employed for the purpose of taking up the sag in the wire of a completed fence. Fig. 2 is a similar View of the device removed.
In the drawings, 1 denotes a cylindrical casting provided with a screw-threaded bore and with prongs 2. 3 denotes a screw which fits said bore and is provided at one end with a squared end to be engaged by a crank whereby the screw may be manipulated. 4 denotes notched arms, which have their inner ends connected to a bar 5, swiveled to the said screw. These arms are adapted to strad dle the post and engage the fence-wires and by the movement of the screw draw them partially about said post to permit of a short piece of wire a (shown on the right-hand post) being engaged therewith to hold the wire taut.
When it is desired to stretch wires or to take up sag therein, the prongs of the casting are engaged with the fence-post, as shown in Fig. 1, and the notched arms are caused to straddle the post and engage the wire. By
operating the screw the wires may be drawn' taut, and in this position the short pieces of wire a may be employed for holding the fence-wires in their taut position.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction, operation, and advantages of the device will be readily apparent without requiring an extended explanation.
The device is exceedingly simple, may be easily operated, and is well adapted for the purpose for which it is designed.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is- In a wire-fence tool, the combination with the casting having a screw-threaded bore and provided with embedding prongs; of a screw engaged in said casting, means for rotating the screw, a cross-bar swiveled on the inner end of the screw, and notched arms pivoted to the ends of the cross-bar, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOHN ELIJAH BOYNTON.
