UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
BENJIMAN F. CROWDER, OF HENRY STATION, TENNESSEE.
CHURN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 637,956, dated November 28, 1899 Application filed November 23, 1898. $erial No. 697,288. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, BENJIMAN F. CRoWDER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Henry Station, in the county of Henry and State of Tennessee, have invented a new and useful Churn, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to churns, and particularly to churn powers adapted to be manually operated; and the object in viewis to providea simple, compact, and efficient construction and arrangement of parts, including a support or seat for the operator, so located as to facilitate the manipulation of the machine while occupying the support.
Further objects and advantages of this invention will appear in the following description, and the novel features thereof will be particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a churn constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a similar view of a portion of the standard with the seat omitted. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the seat detached.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings.
1 designates a standard provided with legs 2, and mounted upon a stub-shaft carried by said standard is a master or driving gear 3, meshing with a pinion 4E. The spindle of said pinion carries a crank wheel or disk 5, which is connected by a pitman 6 with a rocking lever 8. The stems or staffs 9 of the churndashers are adj ustably connected with the extremities of said rocking lever, a plurality of such dashers being employed for operation, respectively, in the receptacles 10.
At one side of the standard 1, above the plane of the upper ends of the legs 2, is a shoulder 11, formed by the upper edge of a block 12, secured to the standard, and at the side opposite to said block the standard is cut away at its corner to form a seat 13, terminating in upper and lower shoulders 14 and 15, the lower shoulder being in a common plane with the upper side of the said block.
16 represents a seat or support provided at its inner end with a V-shaped notch 17, of which one side is parallel with one of the side edges of the seat to form a parallel-sided tongue 18, adapted to fit in the seat 13, between the terminal shoulders thereof, and having its other side inclined or disposed diagonally to the length of the seat to form a tapered 5 5 tongue 19 to rest upon the block 12. This disposes the seat diagonally to the faces of the standard. Pivotally mounted upon the outer end of the seat is a folding leg 20, preferably having its pivot 21 located in a bearing at the under side of the seat and being extended above its pivot to occupy a position in a notch 22, formed in the end of the seat. The inner end of this notch limits the swing ing movement of the leg and maintains it in a downwardly and outwardly inclined posi-' tion, whereby when the seat is occupied by the operator it is held firmly engaged with the standard of the churn power, and at the same time the downward pressure upon said standard serves to prevent displacement.
The stub shaft or spindle upon which the driving or master gear is mounted projects forward from the standard above and parallel with the seat or support and thus overhangs the inner end of said seat, whereby the operating crank or handle, which is connected with said driving-gear, is located within convenient reach of an operator occupying the seat, and the weight of the operator serves to steady the framework and maintain the parts of the apparatus in their operative position.
Having described my invention, what I claim is The combination of a churn power having a standard provided at one side with a shoulder 11 and at the opposite side with an obliquely-disposed notch 13, and a seat provided at its outer end with afolding leg, and having a bifurcated inner end provided with a parallel-sided tongue 18 to fit in said notch in the standard, and a tapered tongue 19 to bear near its inner edge upon the said shoulder of the standard, whereby the weight of the occupant of the seat serves to steady the standard, with dasher-operating mechanism having a driving-gear of which the spindle project-s forward from the standard above and parallel with said seat and which is provided with an operating-spindle, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto aifixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
BENJIMAN F. OROWVDER.
