CHURN.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 19,334, dated February 16, 1858.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, H. D. BAKER, of Pittstown Corners, in the county of Rensselaer and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Mode of Operating Churns; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and eXact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a side sectional elevation of my improvement. Fig. 2 is a plan or top view of ditto. Fig. 3 is a detached face view of the wheel by which power is transmitted from the rotary shaft to the lever which actuates the dasher.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
This invention consists in a peculiar arrangement of parts as hereinafter shown whereby a churn dasher is operated by the oscillation of a chair, the operator being seated therein and, by a trifling exertion, performing expeditiously the desired work.
To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct my invention I will proceed to describe it.
A, represents a rectangular framing on the upper part of which a platform B, is secured.
C, is a chair, or seat which has pendents (a) attached to its under side, said pendents being fitted loosely on a shaft C, the ends of which are secured in uprights (o) on the platform. rlhe chair or seat C, is allowed to oscillate or vibrate in consequence of the pendents being fitted loosely on shaft C.
'Io the front end of the chair or seat C, a rod D, is attached and this rod is connected to a treadle E, the lower end of which is attached or pivoted to the lower part of the framing A, as shown at (b). A projection (c) is attached to the lower part of treadle E and this projection is connected by a rod (d) to a crank on a shaft F, which is placed transversely in the upper part of the framing A, and has a wheel G, at one end. The wheel G has two slots or grooves (e) (e) made in its outer or face side. These grooves cross each other at right angles at the center of the wheel and eX- tend to its periphery as shown clearly in Fig. 3.
H, is a rod or bar which has two guides (f) pivoted to its inner side and at its lower part. These guides are fitted in the grooves (e) (c), one in each, and are allowed to slide freely therein. The guides and grooves being made in dove-tail form, see Fig. 2, so as to prevent the casual slipping of the guides from the grooves. The distance between the two guides (f), (f), is such that when one guide is at the center of the wheel at the intersection of the grooves, the other will be at the periphery of the wheel. rlhe upper end of the rod I-I, is pivoted to one end of a lever I, which has its fulcrum at (g) at the upper end of a rod J, attached to the framing A. The opposite end of the lever I, is connected with the upper end of a dash rod K, which is fitted in a churn L, attached to the frame A.
The operation is as follows: The operator sits in the chair C, places one foot on treadle E, and the other on the platform B, as shown in red Fig. 1. The chair C is then oscillated, being moved forward by the inclination of the body and thrown back by the foot which rests on the platform. This movement of the chair vibrates the treadle E which in consequence of its connection with the shaft F, by means of the rod d) and crank, rotates said shaft F, and wheel Gr, the latter in consequence of the guides (f), (f), of the rod or bar H, fitting in the grooves (e), (e), giving, through the medium of the rod or bar H, and lever I, the dash rod K, a reciprocating motion, two complete strokes being given said rod at every revolution of the shaft F, and wheel By this improvement the churn is operated with but comparatively little labor and the work performed expeditiously, atquick motion being given the dash rod by a simple means. Were a crank employed instead of wheel G multiplying gearing would necessarily be used in order to obtain the requisite speed, and the cost of construction and also the friction attending the working thereof would be considerably augmented.
