EXTENSION-TABLE.
`SPEGIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 637,391, dated November 21, 1899.
' Application led February 3, 1899. Serial No. 704,414. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern:
Beit known that I, ANDREW J. JOHNSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brainerd, in the county of Crow Wing and State of Minnesota, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Extension-Tables, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to extension-tables, and has for its object to provide a table the top of which is divided into sections, the outer ones being arranged to slide successively under the inner ones until those on both ends meet under the center piece, makinga very compact table and saving the annoyance of storing and caring for detached leaves. This object I accomplish in the manner and by the means hereinafter more fully described in detail and particularly pointed out in the claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which like reference-letters indicate like parts in all the figures.
Figure l is a top plan viewof my invention with the table extended and top partlybroken away. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of same. Fig. 3 is a sectional view on line on Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a detail of leaf-fastening.
My invention consists in adding to an ordinary extension-table A a top B, adapted to cover the table A when closed. The top B has extending downward from the middle of each side alug O, from the inner side of which, near the lower end, a pin D projects. The pin D extends into and slides up and down a vertical groove E in the end of the crosspiece F of the slide-carrying frame G. Ooiled springs II, cone-shaped when extended and iiat when released, have their bases fixedin recesses g in the top of the slide-carrying frame vGr in a line between the lugs O and their apexes attached to the under side of the top B. The top B has atongue b extending along underneath the edge of the top B from each lug O outward in both directions. When closed, the two end pieces I of the table abut against the lugs O. The end pieces I have extending along the top of each side edgel grooves t', adapted when no leaves are used to receive the tongues h. Leaves J su icient to extend the table its full length may be inserted under the top B, above the end pieces I. Such leaves J are provided with grooves j and tongues j', complementary to the tongues b and grooves i. The top B, leaves J, and
end pieces I are provided with any of the usual modes of fastening when extended, pref
erably hooks K, set in recesses L, in one, and loops M, complementary to said hooks K, in the other.
The operation of my invention is as follows: If it is desired to use the table with only the top B, the leaves .I and end pieces I are left under the top B. If the table with top B and end pieces I is wanted, the leaves J are removed, and then when the end pieces I have been drawn lout the top B is drawn by the springs I-I down between the end pieces I, the hooks K entering 'the loops M. If a table as long as possible is desired, the end pieces I are extended the full length of the slides, the leaves J drawn out successively, and as the last leaf J is removed the top B settles into its place, drawn by the springs I-I, and the hooks K and loops M bind the whole together.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. An extension-table having a slide-carrying frame, a central top portion connected by springs with said frame and provided with vertical guides and with tongues along the bottom of its side edges, end pieces provided with grooves complementary to said tongues, said end pieces adapted to slide under said central portion, leaves provided with grooves and tongues complementary to the tongues and grooves in the corresponding parts, and means for fastening center, leaves and pieces together, substantially as shown and described.
2. An extension-table having a slide-carrying frame, a central top portion connected by springs with said frame and provided with vertical guides and with tongues along the bottoni of its side edges, end pieces provided with grooves complementary to said tongues, said end pieces adapted to slide under said central portion, leaves provided with grooves and tongues complementary to the tongues and grooves in the corresponding parts and hooks and loops set in recesses and adapted to hold the parts together, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I hereto affix my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
ANDREW J. JOHNSON.
