1 Claim. (01. 312-317) This invention-relates to a combined cabinet and desk wherein the desk is housed within the cabinet and may be readily extended to fulllength beyond the cabinet.
It is an object of my invention to provide an article of furniture of the character described which is simple to construct, and occupies a minimum amount of space.
It is a further object of my invention to provide an article of furniture of the character described wherein the forward legs of the desk form a decorative edge at theforward extremity of the cabinet.
It is another object of the invention to provide an article of furniture of the character described ed or collapsed position, and is further adapted in one position, to provide a blackboard or mirror.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention includes certain novel details of construction and combinations of elements herein more fully described and claimed, and I desire it understood that various modifications will be apparent to those skilled in the art without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention as set forth in the appended claim. In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this application:
Figure 1 is a View in perspective of the invention showing the desk in dotted extended position.
Figure 2 is a fragmentary section taken along line '2-2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary view of the invention similar to Figure 1 showing the top front panel extended and the rear panel upright.
Figure 4 is a sectional view taken along the line 4-4 of Figure 3.
Figure 5 is a fragmentarysection of an alternate construction embodying the invention.
Figure 6 is a fragmentary section taken along the line Ii-6 of Figure 5.
Referring to the drawings in detail, the, cabinet includes a pair of side walls Illa and Illb and side walls Illa and Iflb and is hinged with respect to panels Ilia and I'Bb by means of a dowel I9 which is limited in movement to an inclined upward or downward direction in a recess such as 20 formed in panels Mia and I 61).
The dowels I9 may be secured in top rear panel member I8 or in a peripheral member such as 22 to permit the hinging'of panel I8 with respect to panels I Ba and IE1). A second top'front panel 24 is provided with front legs 26a and 261) secured thereto and is movable with respect to side walls I 0a and H12) in such manner that panel '24 may be Panel 24 is further provided with side brac- I ing members such as 28 and a front brace member 31!. Retention of top member 24 in a proper relation to member I8 and side walls Illa and IBb is obtained by forming an inverted T shape channel 32 in side members Ifia and lb and includes a dowel 34 which is attached to brace member 28 and rides in the head of the.T section 32, as more fully shown in Figure 4. Top member 24 may be removed if desired.
For the purpose of utilizing as much of the available space as permissible a hidden drawer 36 is formed under top member I8 and under top member 24 when said member is in a closed posi-' the side walls is obtained by forming a groove 201' in said side wall and providing top member lilac with .a dowel I9.r which is adapted'to move within the confines of recess 20;c, as illustrated in Figures 5 and 6.
' The embodiment illustrated in Figure 5 similarly shows one of a pair of doors which may be used with my invention in place of open shelving. In operation reference is made to Figure 1 wherein my combined cabinetand desk are in closed position. To extend the desk it is merely necessary to pull out top member 24 by graspmg and pulling on member 30, permitting top member I8 to fall into the place previously occupied by member 24, and thus forming a writing area having the combined cross sectional area plurality of cross members extending between said side Walls and adapted to maintain said side Walls A cabinet comprising a pair of side walls, a
in fixed space relation, a first top member and a 7 second top member, means hinging saidfirsttop 7 member to said side walls, a'pair oflegs secured to said second top member, a pair of oppositely disposed inverted T channels formed on the inside of said respective side walls, a pair of projections secured to opposite sides of said second top member and slideably mounted within said channels respectively, said first and second top members forming a continuous surface in extended position, and said first member stacked above said second memberin closed position.
